On the subject of pony squishing

My little 13.3hh newforest pony can take me no problems and I am 5ft4 and weigh under 9stone, he still manages to bronk and bolt off with me. He even managed it when I weighed 10 and a half stone.

It depends on several things, how well you ride, whether the horse has had any injuries (back and legs specifically), his fitness etc. So it is hard to pick a number out of thin air on that basis, but asuming a fit horse, balanced rider, no inuries etc then 12 stone for light hacks etc, closer to 10 if we are talking harder work.

I find these threads interesting - for those who think people over 8/9 stone should be on a 14hh pony, extrapolated down, who do you think breaks the smaller ones (11h etc) We sure as hell don't throw 5 year old children on them unbroken. I used to break in some ponies for the riding school, anywhere from 10hh upwards. I looked like a prat, at 5'7'' and did most bareback as there is not a chance I could have fitted my bottom in a tiny pony saddle, but not once did I have any issues where I felt my weight was a burden to them. I would have been around 9.5ish stone at that time.

As for the person who said they like it when 'fat' people blame muscles, I know someone whose BMI says she is underweight, yet her fat % is through the roof. She is seriously unhealthy, and is on a doctor recommended fat loss / weight (muscle) gain plan. My body fat % is less than hers, yet my BMI puts me overweight. I don't 'jiggle' when I walk, my legs don't wobble if I slap them, because I am quite muscley. Even my personal trainer is impresed by how much I can lift both with my arms and legs. I am not saying there isn't fat there, there certainly is, but when I am being given exercises specifically so that I minimize the muscle I build, and having been told that in order for me to reach what I believe to be my ideal weight and remain healthy, I have to lose muscle mass as well as fat, it is perfectly conceivable that people are heavier because they have a large quantity of muscle mass.

Oh goad, looking at this post I dread to think what people think about me at 12 stone riding my 14hh Fjord! Oh well, he is still going strong, so not stopping now, infact we are jumping tomorrow!
