How does Abe look to you?

I just got back from a vacation as have seen so many fat dogs that Abe looked positively emaciated. I know he is not.

I think he has lost a little muscle (not getting 3-4 hours of exercise while i was on vacation)

He looks a bit 'softer' than usual but nothing a good workout cannot fix. His overall weight, from that photo, does not look too bad.
B always comes back from kennels a bit roly poly :o
 
I think that you're right that he's lost some muscle compared to previous photos, but generally he looks in great condition:)
 
I was like "holy crap what happened to my dog"

Yeah i think he was getting like 30 minutes of running a day instead of a few hours of exercise.

Back on the scooter today!
 
He looks alright to me- but then I know nothing!!

Folk from the rescue keep saying "I would have thought Dex would have put on more weight by now" when the vet told me he is in perfect condition at 25.5kg, ribs just visible, nice muscle tone etc and they do tend to have wobbly dogs!
 
Weight wise Id say perfect but then I like a dog to be on the lean side, had to smile at a friend who thought mine looked a bit thin and her Lab is definately overweight.
 
I have a slightly related question while we're talking weight - is it the case that spayed bitches can have less of a tuck-up?

I'm very happy with the weight of both dogs but compared to Ricoh Dax is kind of the same shape all the way along when viewed from the side, whereas he noticeably tucks up underneath and his waist appears more defined, though I can see and feel their ribs to the same degree and they both weigh 26kg.

Can't really see it from any photos I have, will try and get some tomorrow if I have a minute. :)

I certainly noticed Tink lost her "waist" when she was spayed. Even when she's at her leanest after a summer back home, ribs just visible etc, her belly is dropped compared to the other dogs, and she's the only spayed one.
 
My vet said that about 70% of dogs he sees are overweight. He reckons ours are a rare treat!

My biggest husky, who is big powerful male (max height of breed standard and just right in terms of build, ie not really chunky and not a 'racing snake'!), is 22.5KG. My lightest girl is 17KG. We constantly monitor weight with ours. They do loose muscle in the summer as it's just too hot to get real work in (even lying outside the other day they were panting). However, we cut food right back. We invested in some proper dog scales so we could weigh them all regularly. My collie looks too thin but he's just very fit!! We are very careful not to let any get overweight (or underweight) and it does need careful monitoring. The ones who have been castrated / spayed are always the ones that put weight on if we aren't careful! That said it's hard to tell as they in particular have big coats (which can hide their shape a lot) and it's easy to mistake that for being overweight - hence the scales.

Abe looks fine. Like you say - he just needs a bit of toning :-) (in comparison to the other pics I have seen of him).

Suzy you must put some pictures of your dogs up for me one of these days. :)

Both of mine are 24" monsters and Ricoh is the weirdest looking example of the breed I've ever seen. That bloody tail! :o
 
By comparison, my dogs are a bit meatier than some of the ones above - but I wouldn't say they were particularly overweight. Nor would I say yours were underweight - but mine are what I would class at the top end of the range of *normal*. Mine don't work - they ARE couch potatoes. My poodle is probably closer to the lean side but that's just normal for him.

Weight is a huge bug bear for me. I am constantly telling about 80% of my clients that their dogs need to lose weight. Many have told me that either the vet has said nothing at all about the weight, or that the vet says the weight is fine. :confused::eek::mad:

I have a body condition score chart to show people what thin looks like versus healthy and versus fat/obese. Most just sort of ignore it. Some have taken on board what I've said and worked to gettin the weight off. I swear those that have got the weight off, the dogs act as if they have a new lease of life!
