i'm a postie and as a postie you obviously go down tracks etc that the public do not get a chance to, so i went down to this farm and just as i was turning to leave i noticed this collie dog lying down in the garden at the other side and so i went over to it as it didnt appear to be moving and when i got over to it, i literally could not believe my eyes! i thought i was seeing things, the poor dog he looked very old had a massive open what looked to be a massive bulging tumour on its shoulder covering a very large area all the way up its neck and down its leg and also there were cuts and open wounds on and around the tumour were i can only imagine it had been chewing at it as there were huge amounts of flies swarming it i initially thought he was dead but then he moved to try and get the flys off.
i got the rspca number and phoned them and they said an inspector would go straight to the dog, and i just got a phone call from them saying the dog had been seen by a vet but that he was very ill and would not make it , cant stop thinking about him poor boy wish i'd seen him earlier i would say this is not something that would of happened quickly would have said it had been ongoing for quite some time. the people always seemed so nice, how could people let there old dog go on like that ? without vet attention dont think i'll ever forget it

Oh bless him

Hopefully he was put out of his misery before long.
Was it an elderly couple? Even then, no excuse.

Hope you get over it too, well done for helping him.

At least you found this dog and spared it anymore suffering, though it was traumatic for you as an animal lover to see a dog in this state. Wonders will never cease at the total ignorance and complete lack of responsibility and compassion (of the owners).
I hope that in the next life they are served unhappiness and neglect. Disgusting.

Poor dog.

Thank goodness you made that call and stopped him suffering any further.

I hope the owners were given a very stern talking to by the RSPCA and vet. I think sometimes when we love an animal very much we try to convince ourselves that there is nothing wrong when there is - giving them the benefit of the doubt, maybe that's what they were doing? If they genuinely couldn't care less, then they don't deserve to have animals.

Or perhaps they had the dog at home for a last few days of TLC on pain meds etc before being PTS and are now terribly upset that they have also had an RSPCA visit when they were already upset about the dog? After all, you said they seemed lovely, and presumably you do that round fairly regularly and haven't had cause for concern before?

TLC???!!!!! Theonlt tlc that dog obviouskly had was from the OP here!! I work in a vets and fed up of seeing time after time animals in sorry staes that really should have been pts weeks/months even years ago- and they werent because an owner couldnt bare to part with them. Yes its sad and a very hard decision, and yes its not always black and white but if you take on an animalo, the biggest reaponsibilty is knowing when to have it pts and prevent suffering. It is only us who have the power to prevent/stop suffering. Im not sure an animal appreciates being kept alive for longer, just to have some so called tlc- it is the owner that is being selfish-sorry

maybe they were worrying about how much it would cost. (before you shoot me down I know its no excuse !!!)

luckily for me my dog was insured but it cost £800 to remove several strange lumps that had grown on my german shepard.

at least the dogs out of his misery now.

Having had a dog with tumours--just like fatty deposits which did not alter for a couple of years then suddenly become rampant with a new lump almost daily. Yes she had treatment and medication but our vet was in no great hurry to put her to sleep. She was eating, clean in the house and greeting us as usual, although walks were very slow. It is a hard decision and not made lightly.

And so left it lying in the garden with flies worrying its untreated open wounds?

OP thank Goodness you found it, you did the right thing. I'm so sorry you had to see that but clearly you were sent that poor dog's way. Hope you are ok.

No dude this wasnt just lumps this looked as if its neck had burst open! i'd never seen this dog before just there other 2 its at a farm, i'v never reported to rspca before in my life and not something i'd do just for spite!
