One walk a day

She's still very young.
I'd also rule out an injury/discomfort or some form of stress she's experienced when out and about, she may have linked the cue of getting ready for her walk to a negative experience.

I've played around with my dogs' exercise and training/fitness a lot over the years, to be honest I have probably overdone it in the past and at the moment they are doing very little in comparison, they have adapted just fine.

We have a very high energy Labrador, Peril, she covers 13 miles most days and during a long day beating a few weeks ago she did 30 miles. She never tires when out and about but the minute she gets home she switches off, chooses her place on the sofa and sleeps. She seems to have an on/off switch. One proper walk a day for her is the usual during the winter months, two during the longer summer days, I say walk but that particular gait is not within her range, a trot is the slowest she ever moves. Equally though, when she had a nasty stifle injury she was very happy to sleep all day with just a short lead walk and a few loo breaks. She has plenty of other stimulation when she's not out and about, helping Hubby in the garage and playing with our much older Lab. I think let the dog dictate the exercise level, as long as they're getting sufficient to keep them well muscled, fit and healthy then everything will be fine, as Jake has aged, he gets less intense exercise but has not gained weight or lost muscle, and although he lives life at a slower pace he is still stimulated, excited to exercise and very much as important as ever in our lives. If the vet gives her the all clear I wouldn't worry about her reluctance to go on that second walk.

My three, two whippets and a lurcher, the two adults are perfectly happy with one walk a day. They dont want to go for any more than that and dont want to go out at all if its raining. The oldest drops to his side on the floor like hes dead and wont go any further if you force him out in the rain. The youngest girl gets one proper walk with the other two and then a shorter training walk on her own. I'm not sure shes that fussed either, but shes not quite a year old and more bouncy than the whippets, so it does her good to do something more structured. I suspect we will phase it out over time.
My three are the laziest creatures known to man though. The oldest regularly misses breakfast in the winter as he considers 7am about 5 hours too early to get up! ???

I'm late to the party. My shih aged 7 to 11 (guesstimate as a rescue, had her 4 yrs next month) absolutely detests going out when its raining or freezing.
In other weather she's happy enough to trot on a lead from home or work, or potter round loose when I'm poo picking. She loves pack walks with others of all sizes and running down the fields or chasing birds, insects and rabbits etc but NOT if its wet, yuk!
When, in her opinion its too horrid, she either refuses to leave her bed, or if I've lobbed her in the car to go to yard she will pointedly turn her back on me, stating clearly that she isn't moving.
She does have coats, but will still do a handbrake turn in bad weather once she has done the necessary!
I do walk her twice a day, tho one is a longer 40 min stomp- sometimes with a mini shetland in my other hand - but often the afternoon session is cancelled out as she has helped poo pick lol.

A friend has one too - in her pack of 4 - she is exactly the same in hating bad weather and has been known to cross her legs for far too long to evade going out!

just curious, am I the only person in the world who routinely walks their dogs once a day? I’ve genuinely never seen a need to walk them more than once, and have always assumed it’s because people have an aversion to their dogs pooing in their gardens!

is there something I am missing here?

Mine regularly only get one, Fizz would happily not go out from October to March if I let her.

I only walk my jrt once a day not at all in bad weather she hates it.

If she is active in the garden then one walk a day will be fine for her. You could also try a coat and shoes to see if it helps, but some dogs just don't like being outside in the damp weather. Or she could actually be afraid of the dark. I have a 55kg mix breed who is brave as a lion during the day but hates walking in the dark. As he is older, and with 2 hip replacements, he now gets just one proper walk a day early in the morning, gets taken for a quick 15 minutes in the afternoon and the rest of the time can go to the garden where we have lighting for him. No idea why, but it doesn't seem to bother him. Our 3 are all on different walking schedules - only problem is that it means a very early start to get everyone happy and exercised!

Not at all! My terriers only went out once a day, mind you one hated it so much we didn't bother in the end, take my spanners out twice as I can do some training with them and they need the excersise and brain work, plus one doesn't really like to poo in the garden.....

Mine aren’t keen to go in the garden if it’s raining, but love their walks regardless of the weather. They get one walk a day, sometimes two in the summer. They’re kept very occupied when out, we’ve just done 40 minutes of scent work/searching for balls and they’re knackered. We need to keep an eye on Zak because of his hip dysplasia but Bear would keep going all day. He’s a motorbike.

Ours used to get three walks a day when my OH was alive as we shared the walking. I dont have a garden as such so dogs havent had the option of exercising there. I do two a day now, but my corgi x border collie has always given the impression that he only goes out under sufferance because hes keeping me company, always sticks to the path right in front or behind me and never sneaks off into the undergrowth, he also hates being out in the rain or even if the ground underfoot is wet and has never walked through a puddle/mud!

Mine gets one walk a day in the evening (unless I'm off work, or it's the weekend, and then he might get two). He goes in the garden in the morning. I don't have the energy to do two, TBH. He's not a high energy dog and is more than happy with what he gets.

If it's raining, wet, or he hears a noise he doesn't like, he either point blank refuses to step foot out the door, or I have to drag him for the first few minutes...

My sprocker and sprollie get one walk (often quite a long one though) a day. They are perfectly happy to sleep and go to the garden for toilets the rest of the time. The spaniel would go out all day every day if it was on offer but he's not tearing the house apart if that doesn't happen. The sprollie is fed up after an hour and a half walking. He's very weird though generally.

I have officially joined the one walk a day club.

She got up with me today, had her breakfast and went back until about 1 o'clock. Lazy lump.

Jack corgi was very much the same ?
