Only an idiot...

Several of my old cars are living in a nice warm barn, they seem very happy in their retirement, the most recent is still in the field though, I must move him to somewhere warmer ;) :)

Why is no-one outraged?

Shils, you've obviously lost your touch :p

LOL, I never thought I would see the day!! FWIW, I agree totally, but then I also sent my parents to Switzerland when they could no longer cook for me or drive me about!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They should legalise euthanasia in this country, it would have saved me a fortune!!

That is seriously funny {or perhaps not, I don't know!}.

...would keep a horse once it can no longer be ridden, produce foals or be a companion to something worthwhile.
After all, you wouldn't keep a car if it was no longer running or economic to repair.
And only a fool pays more in vet bills than the value of a new horse.
Discuss.
S :D

Wasn't the most important word here 'DISCUSS'?

I haven't seen much actual discussion.

I'm sure it could be said that this is the case. The difference between cars and horses is that only one of them is a sentient being, which is what influences most people when making a decision about a horse's future. Few horse-owners actually want or need to make decisions based solely on finance.
Ours certainly retire with us, if their health allows it. One retired at 12 and lived to be 24.
Perhaps any-one who thinks that Shils agrees with the premise should read some of her previous posts.

Oh dear - I feel a row coming on. I hope that was not the purpose of this post as such an emotive subject discussion can only end one way...

Surely the answer depends on so many different circumstances it will never be really be settled upon.

But in any case, whichever way you feel, calling a loving, caring owner with their own land and substantial financial backing an idiot is not really very constructive is it. Even if they don't have their own land and are as poor as church mice I don't believe they should be called idiots either.

Please - what is the definition of a troll again???? Ahh "Wikipedia: posting on an online discussion forum, chat room, or blog, with the primary intent of provoking other users into a desired emotional response" ... maybe or just maybe the "idiot" is poking in the wrong direction.

 OMG Shils, youve been called a troll, im sorry but the above is funier than any cob thread that could ever be started. I think forum history had been made.

*goes off singing shils is a troll shils is troll* PMSL :D

Genius!!

I nearly fell off the sofa laughing!!

I also wondered what is the point of people having dogs or cats or any other pets for that matter? They serve no purpose whatsoever, you can't even use them as a mode of transport like you can a horse, and their food costs a heck of a lot of money. They make your house stink and cost you a fortune if they get ill too! I mean, you can get a kitten for free but it costs you £70 to have it spayed? Are these people insane????
As for people who pay up to £1000 for a dog! I mean, why????? May as well burn money!

SOME people are SO stupid they give money to charities who look after horses and others animals whose owners have seen sense and got rid of them!

What a ridiculous load of rubbish, some people must be REALLY bored. I mean, come on, it's Saturday night FFS!!!!!!!!!!!

I must be an idiot then... we have a retired welsh veteran pony at home. She was a rescue pony and now is living the life of luxury bless her. We also kept our old TB x to the end and he spent the last two years of his life retired. I don't think there is anything wrong with keeping horses as companions/retired pets as long as they aren't in pain and you can afford to look after them properly.

I do, however disagree with breeding from a horse that is unrideable, this is why we have so many poor quality horses. I know someone who has a very difficult and temperamental mare, and because they don't like riding her, they have decided to put her in foal... so now there might be another problem horse if the foal takes after it's mum. Also, people who breed horses with poor conformation are idiots as it just increases the amount of poor quality horses which don't have the conformation to stay sound for the work which they are required to do.

Sorry, I just had to have a rant! :o

Oh, I get it now!

Someone who has been here for quite sometime and has MANY posts is allowed to post something that can be only described as 'Trolling' (yes, you ARE deliberately posting just to 'inflame' a situation, tongue in cheek or not.....)

....YET....

Someone who posts and is a relative 'Newbie' can be called a Troll and feel the full wrath of the HHO forum posters??

Silly me, how dellusional am I??

It is possible to *discuss* in an adult manner, without becoming 'inflamed', as in fact, most posters have.

You are indeed correct!

Unfortunately, on the threads I seen recently, the poor newbies who are seeking advice (we are not talking about the obvious ones who come to provoke, those are easy to spot....) about genuine issues are treated rather roughly....

Sorry, I just had to have a rant! :o

I've just found out a mare I sold 4 years ago has had a foal, been sold on and is now up for sale as a companion as they can't get her in foal again. It is very annoying poor girl.

When my equines are no longer fit for purpose I put a little plait in their manes and the nice gypsy/travellers take them away for me. Easy Peasy. :D

It is as expensive to keep a good one as a bad one so financially it is pretty stupid to keep a horse that is no longer able to work.
Anyone who does keep their old knackered/retired horses are just fluffy bunnies...

If they want to breed from their broken mare then that is ok if it is a good mare. Once the foal is weaned they can send the mare to market, the abbatoir or Franch...

;)

I think anyone who keeps their old horses in retirement must be mad...quite mad...completely mad actually...;):D

Could be Christmas number 1??

Oh let me know when it is on Itunes!!!

My horse has been told that she cannot grow old, and cannot get sick.... and as for foals...... damn, I knew I shouldn't have had her "neutered".

Now then what do I do about the 3 legged, one eyed, no dodars, stumps of canines elderly staffy that seems to be bossing me about???

I think I've gone past the 'idiot' stage, I'm now a certifiable loony - I collect (and tend to preserve) retired horses. But at least I'm a source of amusement...

Well I'm an idiot twice over then :D

I love my cripple and my old pony though and think they deserve the best that I can afford even if they are not ridden.

I feel a responsibility towards them and yes they are bl**dy expensive pets and I could certainly do without the financial burden of having them...

Sorry but Shildair has been on this forum for ever and has started several posts that have at sometime turned nasty. People that know her/him say they are intelligent. It seems she/he likes to start controversy. Best to ignore, as this is how she/he get theirm kicks.:D:D:D:D
