I have very little understanding of how the points system works, or why it's important, but I like the idea that Mr F has one all the same. Apparently I've also shifted up a rider group... Which is a little ridiculous as all we did was rock up and cruise round a fairly mediocre test yesterday, but I shan't complain :D

We were doing the E43 at Norton Heath, and it may have been a poor choice of BD debut as it was actually mobbed! At least 3 rings, big classes (by my standards anyway!), rather packed warm ups and a chaotic lorry park :eek3: I recall seeing something about young horse qualifiers on the schedule which I imagine is the explanation for this. Anyway, baptism of fire and all that...

He warmed up pretty well, and we didn't have any major crashes - which was little short of miraculous - and he rocked around the test pretty happily and without any major dramas from him. Some of the trot work, and his medium canter felt pretty nice, but I suspect the poor judge was sitting in her hut cracking her forehead repeatedly on the desk with despair...

In terms of simple, stupid mistakes, I had a few navigational issues, including, but by no means limited to, a spectacular half pass onto a forgotten 15m circle ("funny shaped circle!") and a rogue final halt at I rather than G... Literally throwing marks away!

His leg yield was about as sideways as a very straight thing, which I suspect reflects the knife embedded between my shoulder blades for the entire test. Et tu, Brute?! For reasons which do not need exploring at this juncture, I spent several hours the night before on a push bike - despite my protestations that only peasants ride bikes and it is more befitting of my status to ride a pony. (Mind you, I'm not sure quite what gave me the impression I am anything but a peasant!). It would be an understatement to say I was stiff in the morning, and probably blocking him a fair bit, as normally he's very much up for going sideways. I hope that was the issue anyway...

So it would be fair to say I wasn't expecting great things in the way of results. I was pleasantly surprised with his score of 61.4% - lots of marked docked for avoidable mistakes, and a number of very fair criticisms in the comments. But the judge was clearly prepared to give him marks when we did get it a bit better, and the result isn't a complete embarassment, even though it was far from our best performance. I'm taking this as a major encouagement - I'd be more than happy with 65% on our best days, given his conformation and lack of flash, and if we can get low 60s with our performance yesterday, I think that's possibly not an outrageous aim.

Of course, it helps when you can blind the judge with simply obscene amounts of bling... The poor woman will probably be seeking emergency medical attention for her burned retinas and sending us the bill... Does 3rd party liability cover this, or should I write on my entry forms in future warning the judge to bring protective sunglasses?! Seriously - look at the sparkle on his swish new Equiens browband:

(I know, I know, all the traditional nativists are shuddering and going to lie down in a darkened room! :D )

And other test pics... I'd really like this one if it weren't for the sign messing up the background.

And the final move, renamed specially for us: "vaguely aim for centre line and flop into a sweaty halt somewhere, anywhere between X and judge". We managed this sublimely...

I can offer tea and scones for your trouble if you've made it this far... It's too early for hard liquour and too hot for anything very exciting!

Well done and great photos, norton heath is my local too, I think I might have seen you there last week ? Or your pony has a lookylikey ! I was there doing two prelims but watched some of the elementary tests whilst waiting for my sheets.

No that was us - and that test was ghaaaastly... One of those days where nothing quite goes right! Come say hi next time :)

The ful story of last week is here - don't judge me, I'm not usually this feckless!

Well done great job I do the same classes there and they are hotly contested normally so you did well to hold your own with a few mistakes good job :)))

He's so cute :D Well done, you guys look so good together now. He really suits being plaited and blinged too :)

What a fantastic blog :-)

The judge was a bit harsh that day, I got over 8% higher in my second test with the other judge ! But looking at the positives she gave me lots to work on at home :-)

Well done - he looks fab :)

Thanks!

Well done, great result for your first BD! Love the sparkly browband, it definitely suits him. He's a gorgeous highland pony :D

:D He is gorgeous... #biasedowner! Thank you :)

There was a good 12+ in the class which is a lot round here (from what I've seen), and they all looked pretty polished! Just need to engage my brain next time :D Thanks!

Thank you :) He's a good lad! We're discussing our blinging options here - thinking some gold sparkly plaiting bands amongst other things :eek3: :D

Well done! superb result

Thank you - it's not exactly a world beater, lol, but for the two of us in the circs, I'm pleased :)

Glad it amused you! Yea I thought that. But our test wasn't exactly great, so I don't really blame her for vomiting bile all over the sheet :p And as you say, plenty to work on at home! The other judge is lovely. I have a massive softspot for him as we won F's first ele under him about a month ago. How did you get on?

Yay fab report! Look forward to seeing you guys again soon :-) Fergs looks fab as usual!

Yep, let me know when you're next out - if I'm free I will crew for you :) Or if you want to come play...

Well done ! I love pics 3 and 4 :) I also like the bling, but Fergus does look faintly embarrassed by it in pic 1 :)

Haha! I love pic 3. It's going on my wall, sooner or later! The focus on pic 1 is too deep, which is a shame as the bling is so shiney and sparkling! I think that's why he looks embarassed. He normally likes poncing about in his sparkly dancing gear!

WooHoo, your dressage is no longer pointless. I bow to your superior rider group! :)
That is serious bling. You can get a noseband to match.
Sounds like your day out went somewhat better than mine but we wont go in to that.:(

Good thing someone knows the rule book before you posted :)

Love it!
As we said AF sheets please!

Next outing?????

oh my your horse is adorable! And please do buy him bling for his braids, the brow band looks so lovely!

Hehe, if you look real close you can see he already has bling plaiting bands in, but they're the clear ones. I think gold ones to match his browband will look awesome / ridiculous :D

I'm feeling a bit Groucho Marx about the whole rider group thing - not sure I want to be a member of any "club" that would have me as a member - or rather, by the fact that I am eligible to be in that group, it must be a rather lowly affair ;)

Wow, bling noseband... That would look... Interesting ;)

well done :) Not all days go to plan, but they add to our learning experience!! Still a respectable score!
And loving the bling ;)

Exactly, it's not like I went out expecting to win / have the judge declare Fergus "the next Valegro" or anything! Thanks :D

Lol yes I should point out for posterity's sake that I was totally oblivious to the points / group affair until Dianchi pointed it out! AF sheets is the next aim... I was meant to be at Hastingwood this Saturday but I seem to have epically failed to send the entry off. Will have to see what I can sort out!

well done :) he looks awesome in his bling!

Thank you :) I'm learning from the masters, when it comes to bling!

Love the bling, and congrats on the point!! :D

Thanks! Poor Mr Point will get lonely though so I'd better try and get him some friends ;)

How nice! A lovely shiny point to go with his lovely shiny browband! ;)

Looking fabulous in the photos and I think 61.+% for your first BD bash at Elem is pretty bloody respectable! Well done :D

x-posts - thank you :D Yes we need matching shiny points and shiny tat :D

We-ell I'm half thinking that it's only just more than "satisfactory", but on the other hand, it's not awful either and it's not like I felt it was the best test we could have performed, so hopefully we aren't too much of an embarassment to ourselves :D

That pony is an absolute star, he looks fabulous in his bling and is a nifty little mover as well:).. I shall confess that I bought my Hipo a blingy browband (blame PS and NM) and he looks rather fetching in it, I think they do suit a bit of bling. As a matter of interest, what make of bits are you using? They seem to fit his pony sized mouth beautifully.

Massive congratulation on your performance but as a dyed in the wool native owner I want to know how you got those lovely plaits in with a mane three feet long LOL

Scissors, rakes and a complete disregard for tradition ;)

He is a star :D Thank you! All highlands should have bling. When I take over the world, I'm going to make that law... *mwahahaha* Bet your chap looks fab :D

The weymouth is the cheapest one I could find on ebay - it was bought as an experimental cheapo affair to see how he went in it. I've never bother to uprade to a branded / posh version! I don't think the bradoon is branded either - I just picked the thinnest, slimmest one they had!

He looks wicked!!!! Massive well done :)

Thanks! :D
