Ooookay - head desk moment before bed

£100, wow, I don't like to see random crosses being sold for crazy prices, but that is NOT going to put off the inevitable type of person that these pups will attract :(

Seriously, there is going to be a *****storm a few years down the road with all these husky/malamute/GSD/bull breed/Akita crosses and I dread to think what will happen if some of the other continental herding breeds start getting thrown into the mix :(

What like a malinois x husky?
Or how about tervuren x husky?

Yeah we have had both of those in puppy classes recently.

Any continental herding breeds, those are hard enough, but I mean crossed with bull breeds. You have very high drive/intensity vs unstoppable force.
And dogs that won't end up in puppy classes :(

I'm more worried about husky/shepherding breeds x bull breeds.
But there's no doubting that a lot of these mixes are a lot less fun once they hit 12 months and you see them appearing on the same websites months down the line.

But hey, I am probably being a doom monger.....

In fairness to a lot of the Inuit/Sarloos/Czech wolfdog people, they are doing it properly in terms of hip scoring, choosing the right dogs to go with the right bitches, putting a bit of work on their dogs, but as with a lot of breeds, there are shysters out to make cash and sod the consequences.

There was an interesting discussion about this on one of the working sibe forums recently. Huskies only came to the UK in any kind of numbers in the 60's and 70's, imported almost solely by people who actually wanted to work the dogs and who were heavily involved in setting up sled dog racing as it's known over here today.

If you wanted one of these dogs you went to the rallies, you got to know the people, you got involved in the racing scene and if you were deemed suitable you might just be allowed to have a pup.

It was kind of inevitable that that control would slip, of course, and that time is coming around now. It's exactly the same as happened in the past to the GSD, dobes, rotties, staffies etc., only those breeds have been around longer and got a good 50 year or so head start on the sibe to start 'degenerating'.

They are bloody useless pets and it will all end in tears in about ten years time when enough of them have ended up under car wheels or shot by farmers (or, god forbid, inbred/crossbred and goaded into becoming aggressive and ending up snacking on children).

ARGH.

Also, that site is bloody awful. "Miniature JRT, choose our stud for easier birth, small size!". Jesus.

I think you're being realistic. Like you said a dog intent on herding things with unstoppable force and an owner who fails to train them...its just a recipe for a disaster.

is there an organisation called "the british wolf dog society"? be nice if the reporters at certain newspapers were to look into this a bit more?
I love my dogs and they were never chosen to be family pets, but why would anyone want one of these as a "family pet"?

Again, in fairness, a lot of those breeds are wolfdogs in name alone, there is very little if any real wolf in them, the GSD when it first came to the UK was called the 'Alsatian Wolf Dog' - it was better to be known as part wolf than to be known as all German back then :p but there was no wolf in them at all, no more than any other breed of dog.
I don't think anyone can deny they went for 'their' breed because of looks, in the grand scheme of things, then found out about the dog's character after and that sealed it.

I'm a pointy eared, big, lean dog type of person, some people like flat faced dogs, some people like spangles and labs, some people like wolf-like dogs.

I understand people like their breeds-im guilty of been a border collie fan and greyhounds.:o:)
But then when you look at your dogs do you sit there and think.."mmm today im going to cross a GSD with a malanois and then cross that with a spaniel" No you dont!;)
Its that I dont get? love your breed and enjoy its strengths, but why mix up so many breeds? to breed ..well a dog that looks like nothing like the breed you wanted??

Oh I totally see what you mean...just my opinion of course, it's 2011, there are hundreds if not thousands of breeds out there, and all those dogs in rescues, and crosses, there must be SOME dog out there to fit every purpose, without inventing new ones.

A friend of mine has an inuit (she describes him as 20% wolf) and she is very vocal about uniting all the inuit/utonagan/wolfdog types and would like to see a single KC-recognised breed out of it. I can't help but think why - yes, they are lovely looking dogs, and yes I did intentionally buy what I thought was one of them (probably not the best person to be whinging about this :p) but as a breed they are a bit, well, useless. They'd make a rubbish sled dog (hell, even the sibe has been usurped by the Alaskan husky/Eurohound) and a rubbish working dog in the GSD type vein. As a pet they are large, hairy, vocal and destructive.

He is a lovely creature, if a little thick around the middle (!) but there don't need to be any more of him.

Totally agree! and when I see more dogs/puppies been pts as kennels are full then it pees me off that some twonk is breeding well...more mongrols but in the whole scheme of things the majority of these "wolfdog" and also the "olde staffordshire terrier" which is in fact nothing like a staffy and more like a pit bull! and the other bizzare breeds no one says anything?:o

I've seen a couple of adult Staffy x sibes about and as awful as it may sound they are all viying for the title of worlds ugliest dog thankfully each one of them have been well socialised and attended classes

I love the Siberian as a breed but I think anyone who is thinking of having one without working them in some form should think again, as BC said they are not pet dogs.
I personally will not be having another but that is because I discovered the malamute

The less I say the better about all these cross breeds
