ok, can i start by saying, this isnt for me and i dont want loads of people saying "learn to ride better" or anything, i am merely passing on a question. :)

basically she has just bought an ex-racer, a couple years off the track and he has started bucking and tossing his head, and chucking her off (A LOT) so she had the dentist out today and it turns out he hasnt been done in over 2 years and had teeth like razor blades! so after 1 had a half hours with the dentist he is having a couple of days off. and the dentist suggested a myler bit, she asked me about it and i genuinely have no idea about bits as i have always used snaffles. so my question is what are they like? are they harsh/soft etc also what variations are there? which are best etc :D sorry about the long story and thanks in advance x x x

Mylers do come in a snaffle. :) My mare has a Myler comfort snaffle with full cheeks and she loves it.

I would give the horse some other health checks too though, he may have more than just the teeth causing him discomfort/pain.

I have both the basic comfort snaffle and the same mouthpiece in a pelham. The Current Appy goes best in the pelham, but we have done dressage in the comfort snaffle, it is very mild, but has the independent side pieces. My mare likes the bit, sisters IDxHanno hated it.

I've got Jazz in an MB02 hanging cheek at the moment and he is fantastic, but I've also put him in an MB02 loose ring, MB02 full cheek, MB04 pelham and MB04 long shank combination bit.

The MB02 is dressage legal and is essentially a barrel link with independent side movement. The MB04 is similar but has a slight port for extra tongue room but is not dressage legal.

Hi

I am by no means an expert but I found the big cob prefered a french link snaffle with cheeks to the myler bit he had previously, he just seems more comfortable in it. Worth a try though (but try to hire first as expensive!).

I love my Myler, my polo pony mare is generally very quiet, but when she gets excited when playing she is VERY strong. In a pelham she just stopped and reared, and in a gag she just ignored it. I tried her in a Myler combination (has a gentle mouthpiece but additional hackamore type nosepiece) and she has been brilliant. I'll be getting a dressage legal snaffle to break my youngster in with...

I find horses tend to sit behind the contact in Mylers which some people like as it makes the contact nice and light but so far, I haven't found a horse I like in a Myler rather than another type of bit.

Why has the dentist suggested a Myler?
Does he think the horses needs more room for his tongue than a normal snaffle gives?

If so, NS do a good range of shaped mouthpieces, and you can get good copies cheaper as well (they also come up on eBay a lot).

Or could look at the Hippus bit which I love but it is quite expensive- but then, Mylers aren't cheap either :)

My old horse went well in a myler, it was a low ported snaffle with the hooks. I like them but I do like the look of the Neue Schule bits.

Hiya,
I have an exracer with a very sensitive mouth. As soon as I got him I put him in an straight bar eggbutt happy mouth (the loose ring happy mouths have quite big holes and can pinch) and he absolutely loves it. The dentist recommended the straight bar because thoroghbreds have very shallow pallettes hence a jointed bit can be quite severe when it hits the roof of the mouth. Because it's a happy mouth it has some flexibility. Not a very attractive bit but certainly works for me. I'm now doing novice dressage tests and still using it!:)

I'm not much of a fan, I have ridden a few horses in mylers and don't think any went better in the myler than they would have in a normal double jointed snaffle. I think horses can get quite fixed on the bit in a myler and lean.

im not sure why the dentist suggested it but i would guess it was because he has a big tongue as he is a very big boy and i will tell her to get everything else checked out. thank you everyone :D

(the rider is only about 5'2" i think he is about 16.2 ish maybe bigger)

I think its one of those questions that doesn't really have an answer and I suppose it's hard to pass on advice/info 3rd hand, although it's good of you to ask for your friend but I think you may of got quite a mixture of answers here.

Thing is there all different, may not be the best of ideas to change the bit just yet until the horse has settled and got used to his new improved mouth so to speak if it was really bad, otherwise your friend may not be able to see if there has been an improvement since the dentist has been if the horse has to start getting used to a new bit as well, specially if the horse resists it.

If the horse has started bucking and is really out of character then certainly the back and saddle needs checking, he may of been holding himself not quite right during ridden work or compensating else where because of his mouth (or other reasons) and finally had enough and started bucking etc so again before trying a new bit, would make more sense to have that looked into first and again to see if there is any improvement.

Re the big tongue.....thats why I went with the Myler....pony has a big thick tongue and was constantly trying to get it over the bit....Myler didn't help at all, he now has a Neue Schule verbindend ( both mine do) and its been fab for him.
