I'm about to relocate for 6 months, potentially longer but I'm pretty stuck as to what to do with my horse! I've had him for 5 years now and hes been at his current yard for 4 years, he's very settled and happy. He'd stay there on loan to the girl that hacks for me twice a week but the selfish part of me really wants to take him with me! Just wondered what other peoples opinions are on moving their horses if its potentially only for 6 months, is it worth unsettling them for such a short time?

my current yard is at a friends house so that's not an issue, I bought him from her and I know she'd never see us stuck without somewhere to go

Horses go away for short stays at shows, being schooled or backed etc with no ill effects, unless yours is particularly difficult to settle for some reason I would take him, 6 months is a long time to be without your horse and if you end up being away longer you may really regret leaving him, find a nice yard and he should be fine.

When I got married and went on honeymoon I put my 2 tricky horses in livery for 6 weeks (2 weeks before wedding and 4 weeks while I was hols in NZ) I had family staying at my house for the esay ponies and other pets but they didn't have enough horsey experience for these two. Did them no harm at all. But they aren't stressy times and used to going places and doing stuff.

Six months is a long period of time IMHO

If you can find somewhere decent and take him back where he was if you move back, I would go for it, he's your horse, but you must realise that the sharer would probably find something else in the time you're away..

Hello,
I think horses can settle in very fast.
My horses moved a lot when they were in France. They maybe had 6 differents places (and some just for 2 or 3 months).
And now they arrived in UK, they already moved last week-end for a new yard, so stayed just 3 months in their first english yard.
It depends of their behaviour, and if your horses is easy going with other horses, mine were always together, so it was easier for them i think.

Thanks for all the comments, its helpful to hear other peoples opinions. I've been away for the last 6 months anyway whilst working in france so considering another 6 months without my boy seems horrid! He's a fairly chilled character as long as he's only with geldings, he's 17 but thinks he's 5! I think i'll start yard hunting as soon as I've moved and got settled! thanks everyone!

Thanks! I've been in France for the last 6 months, back to the UK in a couple of weeks and moving from the New Forest to Brighton! Absolutely loved living in France though, skiing, wine and sooooo much cheese!

Mine use to spend 6 months at home and 6 months on livery. Every year for about 5! He wasn't bothered in the slightes :)

my horses used to come to school with me and when my family went away our cousins or trainers would take them in for a few weeks, also my current horse has relocated in ireland for a few months with me, it was a big move but the more i think about the idea of him not being here makes me wonder what would he have done while i was away

and as you have had your horse a while it would be difficult to have that amount of time apart
