Opinions on the horse please (pretty please)

Looks like he might go around with his head in the air, but then would he have won a WH like that?

Have you phoned up?

I'm assuming it's yours?
Very nice horse, sounds like someone is going to have a lot of fun with him. Only thing I want to pick at is that it's "bRought" not "bought" on!
ETS: think I may have got the wrong end of the stick! In that case the only other thing I'd pick on is its neck...

It does look nice but a bit 'upside down' muscle wise. I'd ask to see some proper conformation pics ie stripped and stood up properly unless it's close by.

I've started to do this with every horse now and saved loads of petrol this way, I just haven't got the time to spend my rare days off travelling to see neds which aren't what I'm after so don't feel guilty, make use of modern technology!

My daughter has phoned up and had a chat with the woman. We are going to look (it's a very long journey) but I have told the girls that we will video, photograph, come back and think about it very carefully and show the video to the trainer. If it goes it goes and it wasn't meant to be. It's in Leominster and we are in Manchester. I am a daft mother really - but I suppose it's a trip out and I will not commit to anything.

Is there anything I should be looking out for.

He looks quite thick under his neck and it says placed in the WH so you don't no how many were in the class.
Doesn't say his breeding either. I would say a bit pricey for a hunter..

There is a lot of rigging on that pony and the muscles in the neck suggest to me that it might have a tendency to point the nose and go hollow. I wouldn't absolutely discount it but I reckon it is going to be a lively ride - would have preferred to see pictures of it moving

Personally, I wouldn't buy it, not at any price..but it isn't a type I like

Interesting to see that they just show a stationary shot of the horse when he has SJ'd, XC'd and WHP'd. Check out exactly what level he has won at and how many in the class. Perhaps ask if they could email some more photos to you of him competing.

Ad doesn't specify whether he has any vices or what he is like to load, shoe etc. Says he hacks out alone but doesn't say whether he is good in traffic.

Photo is not particularly flattering and makes him looks upright in shoulder plus you can't see his feet (which are obviously very important)! However, I don't think the price is exorbitant for a registered Sec D IF he is genuinely wins at SJ, XC, WHP at a decent level, and has no quirks.

Sorry that all sounds negative, but is really intended to be a list of things to check out.

No - not negative at all - we are window shopping really at the moment - if we find the perfect pony we will buy - but I don't mind looking at a few to learn at little bit about what to look for.

I will print this out and remember to think of all these things.

Bearing in mind your post in Comp Riders, is this for the daughter that wants to BSJA? If so then you might be best to look for something that is actually competing at that level, even if you have to think about something in the more 'veteran' category to get something at the right price.

Remember what they state in the ad is very important - if things go wrong and there is a dispute over the sale then the ad wording can be used as proof. So if they state in the ad '100% in traffic' and then when you buy it, it tries to throw itself under every passing lorry or bus, you have much more of a case than if they tell youit is traffic proof verbally. Always keep a copy of the ad, whether it is from the web or from a magazine.

It is not always what is said in the ad, but what is NOT said! People normally stress the positive and don't mention the negatives. So make a checklist of everything you can think of - catching, loading, shoeing, traffic, hack alone, whether it rears, bolts, bucks, crib-bites, weaves, windsucks, bites, kicks, naps, has any illnesses/ailments (especially things like laminitis & sweet itch) and note what is mentioned in ad and check out with vendor.

Also try and take the vendor's word for very little - if they say it hacks out alone in heavy traffic then see it do so. If you want a competition pony then see it out at a show if you can. Ask for competition records and check placings out on the internet if poss. If it has been used for PC/RC then check with DC or RC organiser. With so many event photographers being on the internet then you should be able to find quite a few photos of it competing - find them yourself because vendors might only point you in direction of the good ones!

I'm sorry I sound so cynical, but have seen so many people end up with the wrong horse over the years!

Nuala; personally I wouldn't. He has a very pretty face.......but he doesn't look "full up" for registered Sec D to me.

I wish you good luck as it sounds like you are set to make the long journey, but unless you are going out for a day-trip aswell I wouldn't get too excited about him.

Sorry that it's not positive as I know how difficult it can be to find what you specifically want. I've learned to bide my time over buying horses.

Thank you very much TGM and everyone else. To be honest I do not think this is the pony for us -but my daughter is desperate to see it - and it's only time eh.

It has not done much at all from the conversation my daughter had with the woman - certainly not BSJA. It is a real dilemma to decide quite what to do. I don't have a lot of money and am no sure we can get what we want for under £6k. So the aim is to see some ponies and get a feel for what people are charging and what you can get, so we can make some decisions.

Tia - thanks. I agree with you - we are in for a long trip for nothing. But I don't mind making the trip - we will take the puppies and stop somewhere nice for lunch on the way back.

I have told the girls that this time we will really take our time and be sure before we buy. (Of course being teenagers - they want it now.)

Ah ok!

Fair enough - just remember to be really firm and don't let them buy it if they fall in love with it and it doesn't fit the criteria!

At least two years - and who knows after that?

Not being horsey and not having the greatest mobility - I didn't let the girls have their own horses until I was 100% sure that they would look after them (they are on DIY) - so we are a bit late to this. If I had known more - I probably would have spent more money first time around - but hindsight is a wonderful thing and the girls have learned an awful lot this last two years.

I am just trying to give them opportunities. Only time will tell if it is the right thing to do.

god-wish my mum would have spent 6k on a horse for me!!!!! how very lucky your children are!! mind you-my boy was only 900 (9 yrs ago) and turned out to be the best buy ever!!

Nuala; if you are looking for a jumping pony to re-sell then I can tell you that Connemara X TB's are what you are really looking for as they are fantastic jumping ponies and 14.2hhs are VERY sought after! My greatest successes (and largest profits) when I dealt in ponies back in the UK, were with ConnieXTb's.

I always found my ones in the Freeads!

I never paid more than £1,000 for them either.
