At a show a couple of weeks ago i was told that my 2 year old sports horse was too "immature" and thats why he was put down the line (as a yearling he won sporthorse and warmblood championships and was never out of the top three).
Basically i am very aware about the dangers of over producing and putting too much weight on immature joints and i am constantly told that my horses are too skinny by judges (barr the BEF futurity, they said he was perfectly fine) but i refuse to put any more weight on this lad as he is filling out very quickly at the minute and seems to be doing fine in my eyes.
what do you think? is he immature for his age, he turns 2 tomorrow? would you want to put extra weight on this? Apologies for the pic, i had to zoom alot!!

defently does not need any more weight he looks fab my mare is always shiny and is never fed it looks like ive covered her in coat shine but i havnt
you do whats best

can't really tell much conformationally from this angle but he looks fine to me - especially at this time of year when they are still shedding winter coats and not yet had the spring grass come through. Don't take it too much to heart as at the end of the day showing can be very subjective to what the judge likes whereas events like the Futurity are judging the potential of the horse and take into account growth spurts, etc.

Good god no. I thought judges were being trained not to put up overweight horses? If he had anymore weight going into hopefully the grass growing season, you could be in trouble.

He is by Dick Z out of Miss Millie II who is by millbrook esquire. He is entire which explains some of the filling out quickly but i just dont understand how he looks immature for two!!!as i understood it 2 year olds are supposed to be that.... not horses that look like they have been in work for 12 months!! sorry having a rant, but at the show where the photo was taken the judge asked me if he was 3, followed by telling me he looked immature after i told him he was 2!!!
He doesnt have a great deal of feed, just haylage and grass!

the showing world is a whole different ball game to the real world of sport horses. I work on one! Our now 3yo filly did very well last season as a 2yo but IMHO she carries too much condition and looks very mature all ready - so always a danger she is going to lose type and get a little coarse when she is fully mature, and I worry about the amount of feeding that goes into getting these youngsters in 'show condition'.
Basically if you are showing at county shows, expect that you probably wont have a real sporthorse judge in your sporthorse class and therefore you may move a few places down the line if you dont conform to the expect type and turnout.

Hi,
he looks really nice and i can't understand what the judge was talking about with him only being 2.
All i can say is well done he looks the picture of health and condition.

What is it with the showing world!!!!!!!!!!!! Why do they want to see over stuffed youngstock!!!!!!!! Do they not realise what damage can be caused to young growing joints when the pounds are pilled on.

He looks the picture of health and quite correct for a two year old colt. He is bred as a sports horse and therefore your aim, I presume, is the big wide world of competition, not the over stuffed world of showing. Take your time with allowing him to mature slowly and you will have a horse for life, not a humpty dumpty that waddles around on the end of a lead rope.
