We have this 2yr old mare who stands at 15.2 at the moment she is broken to ride and is hacking out nicely. She is a early foaling so she was foaled in feb/march time. I just wanted your opinion on whether u would have a go hunting her lightly over the winter. ofocurse there would be no jumping involved or long range galloping, just quietly at the back, i mean our hunt is quite slow anyway i swear that we have atleast 10 mins break every few 100 yards it ridiculous but anyway. I just wanted some of your opinions and would like to hear if any of you have hunted a 2yr old (nearly rising 3 by the time it starts). My aunty broke a cob in last year and he was 2 when he hunted, he acted fine and has clean limbs and everything if anything it did him good because he learnt the ropes if u know what i mean, but he was a strong cob. this mare is a strong filli but i just want your past experiences? thanks alot guys xx
 
IMO - definitely No; if she's going on nicely it may be time to turn her away until next year. Sorry - probably not the answer you were wanting.

I personally wouldn't be even riding a 2 yr old - let alone hunting one.

I'd say don't, she's 2. If you take it steady then you could have well over 20 more years out of her. Why on earth rush? Honestly I wouldn't take her until she was atleast 5.

ETA I do hope it's a joke.
 
well if you consider yourself to be a producer of good horses... your not doing a good job of it by considering to hunt a 2yo... are you mad??

were backing a 3yo... it was bitted for 3 weeks before we had her... then we long reined and lunged for about 2 weeks before we even put a saddle on her... then long reined and lunged under saddle for another 2 weeks then sat on in the stable for like 5 mins doing it all properly, bounces etc...

and then about a week after doing that i got on in the school after she was lunged and walked and trotted around for about 5 minutes, and then got off


youll ruin the horse before youve even started...
they arent physically or mentally ready for those tasks at 2
 
No way! My Sec D didnt even get broken in till he was 4 & I wont be hunting him this winter he will be turned away for the winter.
 
thanks guys. Thats what im trying to tell her owner that she's too young but they are old fashioned people and give me the lecture, 'ive been breaking horses since before u were born' so im trying to persuade them to turn her out and bring her in next year. :#
 
I have a 2 year old and wouldn't even dream of riding him never mind hunting him IMO it is prob ready to be turned away until next year
 
in my limited experience of 2yr olds (being two different horses) one was being lunged lightly with a saddle at 2.5 and the other has been very lightly bear abck lent/sat on also 2.5.

i certainly wouldnt be considering hunting it there's no harm in waiting

If she's 2 and they've lightly backed her, her fitness will be nowhere near good enough to take a days hunting! All of the joints won't have properly formed enough to take going over ploughed/stuble fields plus trotting on roads. I think you should tell them they should seriously think this through. I wouldn't have even started her yet let alone be riding her.
If they won't listen to you I'm sure a quick phonecall to the local hunt sec to let them know the age of the horse would stop them up short anyway.

are you serious!!! Hunting a 2 year old! Thats like asking a 6 year old boy to run a marathon.

You have posted before about riding 2 years old etc......

What so you're the one that's been riding this 2 year old? If so why did you not refuse long ago!!
 
I dont like racing for the very fact underdeveloped animals are asked to do more than both their little brains and bodies can cope with BUT as a flat racer they are ridden by people the weight of a flea, are usually ridden on good going and all they have to do is "run fast" with there mates.

Hunting a rising 3 year old - you are having a laugh or deserve a visit from the WHW.

You dont want to ruin your reputation by riding a horse thats far too young
 
Bearing in mind that two year old thoroughbreds are racing every day,I think comments like "are you mad "are unhelpfull and possibley hurtfull. At least this person is seeking advice.
I personally dont think it is a good idea for a native breed,however if i ahd a git of a 2yo TB who needed to learn some manners then I wouldnt be averse to the odd hour hunting.(fortunately my days of having to do the riding are over)Hunting is as hard or soft on a horse as the rider makes it!

My neighbours started backing their two year old and although he's been brilliant (he is now 3) he just doesnt look physically ready. They also had a nasty incident where a car went past him at 70 so the poor thing is now very scared of traffic. They are sorting this problem but I just dont think even a three yr old should be put under that kind of stress. They will probably now have a lifelong problem with traffic. Saying all this, he will be turned away soon to grow into himself, and he is clearly loving being ridden. It's a tricky one sometimes but I definitely agree that hunting is way too far - they will ruin the horse before they even get properly started. At least my neighbours horse was nearly 3 when they started.

The jockeys will also have a good stable possy and it'll be like there's barely anyone there, whereas I doubt the person riding this can say the same.
