Just wondered what options h&h forum users think about for my horse. He is a 16.2hh rising 7 talented boy- breeding includes Jumbo/just Zulu. I have competed him at be100 level last yr and doing well and did well at byeh classes as 4&5yo. Amazing floaty paces and massive scopey jump. Could go a long way. However, he recently injured his front pastern, has been on rest for 6 months but given all clear for full return to competition following x-ray and u/s today (very unlikley to re-injure due to position). However, I am now 5 months pregnant and won't be planning to ride again until the winter timen(with more limited time). Keeping him in the field feels like a waste, I would consider a professional rider but not sure of cost and options, plus he needs to be brought back gradually first..... Or do I wait and do it myself, when I'm not really sure I will have so much time, but keen to get back to competitions again but maybe not to the level he is capable of. Any suggestions - just trying to think up some options to consider.

What do you want to do?

Personally I would wait as he's had an injury, time won't do him any harm :)

I'm really not sure, I just hope I will be able to give the time to bring him back and fitness to eventing post baby- hence why I am thinking through my options. I love the competing though, so perhaps so kind of share arrangement. I'm really not sure, just want to do the best for him. I know time won't harm him, as long as I can get back to things post baby.

Where in the country are you (on phone so avatars don't show). Maybe someone could loan him for a year or so? If he's sane and safe, I'd be inclined to keep him. This will make riding post baby a lot easier and less stressful than buying an unknown quantity.

well he has been off for 6 months so will need at least 3 months of pavement pounding, and basic fitness work before he starts competing again. in 4 months you should have birthed??!! so maybe an option would be to find a hacking sharer for him to do the hacking etc, and hopefully in a few months you will be back in the saddle a couple of times a week, and he will be ready for a bit of d/sj. do you keep him at a yard? could someone help you out there? get him out in the field as mauch as possible. there is no rush he will still be good next year, and extra time off/pottering around will do no harm. as he is precious to you you dont want just anyone on him. Good luck with the baby as and when, and good luck with the horse but be choosy if you get someone to ride him for you.

Thanks- pony club maybe a good option for enquiry. I don't think he is the best horse for just hacking- he' s about 80% golden boy and 20% sharp as a razor, so needs someone with some experience and even then won't be the most relaxing of hackers! At home I don't have great facilities- nice yard and large fields and 2 miles of roadwork to get to the forest, so probably would need to be re-started in a yard with a school and direct access to quiet tracks or something.

i would look after him while he is off and you are preg (congratulations!) until you are unable to then send him to a good rider to be brought back into work. However i don't think its a big problem if he has more time off and you do the work when you are capable again if money is a problem or you would prefer to manage everything yourself. maybe look into costs and who is local?
