os maps and bridle ways

Where is the best place to look online of a map showing bridle ways?

I know ordinance survey maps are supposed to be good.

Also how is a bridle way show on a map?

The actual ordnance survey website, or try multimap as they have an OS option. Bridleways are the long dash lines, short dashed lines are footpaths. Hope that helps.

I think bridleways are usually long dashed lines on OS maps. Beware though, just cos they are on the map, they aren't always rideable guess it depends on how active the bridleways dept is in your area. I did a week long ride a few years ago with my horse, navigating using OS maps and half the bridleways on it were impassable

No idea about online though, I always buy a paper copy.

There's Bing maps aswel. Yeah bridleways are the longer dashes

If you actually want to ride a route using a map then go and buy the OS Explorer maps, they are excellent and have the best detail for walking/riding/cycling they show features that other maps don't like trees and gradient and field boundaries that really help with navigation. They are £7.99 most places I think.

You can look at them online but will only be able to see a small square at a time, that is fine for checking a route or feature but not suitable to navigate from. They do allow you to down load one map series for free but the scale of the free ones is not suitable for navigating properly.

Try "Where's the path" online - google it. It is searchable and has a split screen with the OS map on one side and satellite pics of the route on the other. I use it a lot to see whether there is a recognisable track when planning to hack out somewhere unknown.

Do not forget to check DEFRA website there maybe permissive bridleways in the area that supplement the established ones.

Go to the Ordnance Survey Web site and buy the Explorer 1:25000 Scale map and the Landranger 1:50000 Scale map of your area. Far easier than looking at them on te computer screen. You would be looking for Byways, Restricted Byways, Routes used as a Public Path and Bridleways. The coloured legion on the map will illustrate the markings that represent them on the map.
