Well it's been a very busy 4 or 5 months (lost count!) of schooling Oscar and watching him transform in to an even more lovely pony than he already was ! For those who don't know, I made a stupid decision to have him shipped over unseen and not even vetted :o I'd just seen a few videos of his movement and examples of his temperament. That stupid decision turned out to be a very good decision as I ended up with the most lovely pony I have ever come across, so willing and loving in every way.

So this is what arrived off the lorry.. I haven't posted these before as I forgot I had them! A skinny, exhausted but calm 5 year old

Very hungry!

He still hadn't muscled up much, but within 8 weeks he looked fantastic

Bad photo but here he is sporting his first clip!

Apart from doing lots of hacking, he has been to a few small shows, jumped 2ft on his first outing and only had one refusal at a double so he came 5th. He then won his accumulator (up to 3ft) a few weeks later, and recently came 4th In a 2'6 in a large class of almost 30!
Here he is jumping double clear :)

And as he is so sensible I decided to try riding with no tack... he got the idea in a few minutes and here is the result!

And a before and after video, including clips from our first ride.

Such a little star :) Thanks for reading !

He is lovely to look at and a very good find for you!

You took a huge risk in buying him, however this has clearly paid off.

I have to say though, from the video, it isn't just him that has improved, your riding seems to have come on too, so I think a well done is deserved all round ;)

Yes it was a massive risk! I have tried a lot to improve my riding through schooling him, I haven't had any lessons or outside input so I had to really take it upon myself to do it right ! Although in the 'before' clips, I was extremely nervous and worried about what potential nutter I was sitting on :p Thank you :)

Fabulous thread - what a transformation you have done so well with him. He really is a super pony and like another poster said the transformation in your riding is great too. Well done - he was a great find.

He is a lovely boy :) How big is he, been trying to find a reference point but not sure haha? He is a credit to you, here's to many more happy years!

I have also bought unseen from Ireland (didn't even see a video so even worse :p) he just had something about him. I got lucky too and he was a lovely boy, unfortunately had to sell when my work got a bit full on. Even after my success not sure if I would be brave (stupid?) enough to do it again.

Thanks for the nice replies ! He is 14.2hh, seemed a lot smaller when I got him, but since he has built up his topline he definitely feels 14.2hh! He has just cost me a vet bill though as I noticed he looked 'off' so called the vet out, had very mild colic from stuffing in too much grass :o so he's got the joy of learning how to use a muzzle tomorrow !

Lets just call it brave! :) I'll call it stupid if I ever do it again and it goes horribly wrong ;)

Your video has inspired me to ride my girl with no tack! Well done, he looks fab and you both look so happy together :)

Hope it goes well! I have to admit that I can't ride that well bareback on my other horse, he has a much more 'expressive' trot :p .

I find if you get them forward and using their backs, there is no need to fiddle around with the head, just a little contact and they work in a nice shape once they have warmed up ! And of course lots of stretching out for horses that still have a lot of muscle to build.
