Am i wrong to be a little miffed? Got to the yard yesterday where Don had been in all day, (my choice) to find the lady next door to me had tied her huge horse up on Donovans door. Her horse had his head right inside the stable, and don was standing at the back. just annoyed me that she has her own stable door, I dont mind if she puts outside mine if don is out, but not when he is in. Anyone else have any views on this?

Yes and it annoys me too! our block is four stables, everyone has a tie to the left of their door except me (on the end) who has a little rail to tie to at the left of the stable. I have two to put out sometimes so i tie one to that rail and then get the other out.....only, the girl next to me keeps tying her pony there in the morning, knowing that i have to be done and gone in about half an hour for work and if her pony is there it screws me right up. Oh and she feeds hay at the rail and leaves it everywhere on the floor.....right outside my stable so i have to sweep it up!!!

and it makes it worse for you with the tie being on your door as the horse can put their head in your stable!

Annoyed me on old yard, but equally not every door had a tying point, or some on corners were not nice to tie on. So annoying but okay.

I'd be miffed if they had their own tie point and horse was tied long enough to have head in stable.

Benson - sorry i would be fuming and would have moved horse as soon as i got there -and politley and very firmly said - dont tie your horse their again.

Same with the rail situation, but i would not sweep up - i would just move the hay outside her stable, and move the horse every morning - no fuss, no words, just move it.

I used to hate this, when I was on livery and worked on a yard my mare had a foal she was about 7 days old. We were on our break and heard a fuss going on and some idiot had tied on the tie ring outside the mare and foals stable :(
My mare had lunged over at the horse poking its head in and horse broke free.
Apparently I should teach my horse some manners

Tehe i have started doing that with the hay as he has been dropping a lot. but then i went down in the dark and the pile was still there and nearly fell over it. lol.

Agree that its dangerous but have you asked if there was a reason for it? if it was a one off I wouldnt be getting to het up now that its been and gone but if they make a habit of it I would be speaking with them or the YO

To tie a horse up outside an empty stable that isn't your own is rude, to tie it outside a stable with a horse in is dangerous and I would do my nut!

I don't normally tie up outside my stable, I normally do things in the stable or tied on the yard but as I've got to have a full bed at the moment I'm having to tie up outside the stable and I'm sure it is driving other people nuts as it doesn't leave much room to get past (luckily she doesn't kick) but I don't have much option and will stop doing it when I'm not having to do a bed to the front of the stable.

Why do people do it? Drives me  What drives me even madder is they put a string loop on the door then leave it :mad: and  One of mine was a right fiddler and managed to get the loop in his mouth and round his lower jaw. Luckily he just stood there with a 'rescue me' look on his face.

Latest horse obligingly eats through the rope of any horse tied to his door  or unties the horse

my horse has a bar across her doorway as she used to kick the door all the time, outr blocks are one horse wide and when i went up the other day a horse was tied up to the stable opposite (which is not hers!) so her bum was against my mares bar-if she had kicked for any reason she could have got my mare. they were put out when i said if you tie up there can you shut my mares door please:rolleyes:

One of mine actually removes the headcollar of any horse tied up outside his stable (and then chews it)

Want to borrow him, Benson, he is an excellent deterrent!

Maybe I could teach mine to do that or undo the rope. He can undo himself so would be easy!

Said girl keeps letting her pony say hi to mine over the door. unfortunately for her, whilst being gelded, Princey does have a habit of taking whole top of neck in his mouth and biting hard - making said girl shriek! Well, dear, dont do it and he wont get bitten!!!

Thing they do not seam to realise is if you were in stable with horse and some numpty ties a horse up outside - you stand the risk of being in the way if a fight starts - how do you think i broke my toe last year??? big lad lunged at horse that put his head into big lads stable - ow ow ow

Now my little lad is great for this - someone used to tie up so horses head could get into little lads space..... little lad grabbed said horses head collar and pulled him back and forth - owner went go smack mine ---- i was there and a you dare ! and i suggest you tie up outside yours in future made sure she never did it again.

And another thing - why do folk tie up in a communal block and then bugger off and leave their horse there for hours so everyone past them has to negotiate a horses bum. Now you may know your horse wont kick you .... but not everyone else does .... and try getting a full wheel barrow past a 17hh horses bum - its not fair on the horse or the person trying to get past.

Agree. Simples, just tell them not to do it. Can't think of a reason why they could object, as its inconvenient and more importantly, unsafe.

Happened back along in my barn at the yard. Can't remember who was doing it now, but they've probably moved on as it doesn't happen anymore. What P'd me off MOST was them looping their lead rope through the hinge of my stable door to tie up (we dont have tie rings outside our boxes as the barn is too narrow). What if their bl**dy horse pulled back? I'd end up coming up to the yard to find my stable door hanging off it's hinges. Grrrr.

We also used to have a woman who would loop a piece of string to the bolt that closes our tack room door (also inside our stable barn) and she'd leave her horse tied there whilst she mucked out or tacked up/clipped etc. No one could get into the tack/feed room because she'd attached her horse to the actual door (not the post and the door opened inwards into the feed room) making it impossible to even squeeze through whilst her poor horse was stood there. Grrrr.... No matter how many times we moaned, she'd still do it. Thankfully, she's moved on now.

I am on the end stable inside a barn and The yard managers sometimes tie the horse's there for the farrier if it is raining. I have no issue with this except they don't always sweep afterwards! I know they probably get caught up in something else rather than do it on purpose but I am a bit OCD about sweeping outside my stable and That really does annoy me!

God, whilst I am temporarily guilty of blocking the walkway with my horse at the moment I wouldn't dream of leaving her unattended! I'm only there at quiet times and she is very good if people want to squeeze past her, or I'll move her over and stand between her and them. I don't ever leave mine unattended and tied up, she is far too good at getting up to mischief while I'm there, hanging herself, untying herself, untying haynets, overturning buckets and boxes, standing on grooming boxes etc etc etc lord knows what she'd do if I left her alone!

And no one thought to simply move it?

These posts make me so glad im no longer on livery, theres nothing worse than having to clean up other folks mess and negotiate horses tied up at doorways, or put up with the glowering owners if you ask them to move .

Amymay..... you did not know the livery involved.... trust me you would have needed to check under your car with a mirror if you even dared look at her or her horse - she was totally MENTAL - thank god she moved.... and moved...... and moved.... i think she does the rounds.... arghth - that means she should be back round at our yard soon.

Plain bad manners I had a similar problem with the woman in the stable next to one of mine in a block of three. If the farrier came she would take the whole area up with their car horse across 3 stables and noone could tie up when they were there! After the farrier had gone there were nails left outside my stable and my horse had recently gone barefoot, nightmare neighbours When my horse was shod she was in and out of her stable like a yo yo as if I was in the way in front of my own stable. Never said anything as I am very easy going but was not sad when unexpectedly she upped and went what a shame now have my other horse in that box so all good.
But if it happened again I would have to say something nicely of course no good making enemies:rolleyes:

I had this the other day, other livery tied up outside my stable, complete with left hung up hay net and associated hay remains on my neatly swept yard! Really got on my wick! Aarrgghh! Plain rude in my opinion, and bloody dangerous if a horse was in there!

Not quite the same, but I am on grass livery on a small yard. Everyone has a stable bar me (my choice) and each has its own tie ring. So I have my own tie ring on the fence opposite the stables. I can pretty much guarantee someone else horse will be tied to it when I want to use it! Or worse, ill leave my haynet tied up while I hack out and when I come back someone has tied to my ring, with my rope and their horse is eating my hay! Ha ha I do sound like a mardy bum :p xx

the farrier thing is one that really 'gets my goat', we have 4 indoor blocks of stables where i keep mine and often i would go up to find nails and hoof trimmings left behind a farrier. my horse is barefoot my daughters has fronts on. it was a while before i saw the guilty farrier in action and i was really annoyed to find out he was not even shoeing any horse in our block, but had led them up from other blocks to shoe them tied up outside our 2 stables. i politely asked if i culd get to my stables as i had both my horses with me and he told me i 'would have to wait'.
so wait i did then i made a point of approaching the yard owner and saying if i had to have any vet treatment linked with mine having nails and the like in her feet, i would sue the yard who could then sue the farrier, who will have no insurance as the owner or a representative is not in attendance whilst the horse has it feet done.
its now a yard rule that somebody has to clear up as soon as the farrier has finished, my farrier will do this if i am unable to be there. i did not realise that a farrier is not insured if he handles the horse in anyway without someone being there

i am a very large mardy bum

Sounds like there are some really inconsiderate liveries out there! My yard has tying up areas opposite everyones stable - nobody ties up except outside their own stable. If there is a farrier visit, people do tie up outside my stable but the rail is not near to my stable door - you can still walk a horse past while the other is being shod. Nobody would be selfish enough not to sweep up the farrier - the YO makes sure of it :D

We all do at our yard but we're a small yard and all the horses are all very settled together so aren't bothered by it, We also know none of them kick so are happy pushing bums out of the way if we need to. In fact if there's one tied outside my stable, my boy will take a massive mouthful of hay and take it to the door to chew so he can share it with his friends! If any horse was bothered by it and was standing at the back of the stable upset, we wouldn't do it though and if your horse is as unhappy with it as he seems you're right to be annoyed.

ETA Everybody also uses my stable for clipping, shoeing, the vet etc as it's the biggest and has the best light. I don't mind as long as it's left as they found it and my horse is never in it during daylight anyway - part of the deal with having the best stable as far as i'm concerned.
