- held onto a gate at all costs while opening it, despite horse moving away from gate
This didn't end well when I tried it...
Rebelrebel, your post had me laughing away to myself!
I rode in a saddle and headcollar a few months ago, which rapidly progressed to just saddle and leadrope under his neck.
Have ridden backwards
Had a friend on behind me
Had a picnic on board because we ran out of time and couldn't stop where we'd planned
Had to use stirrup leathers as reins after they snapped out hacking, horse spooked and I lost half the rein.
Thought we'd go sledging in the snow - I held the bailing twine and cantered off, friend following behind on a feedsack holding the other end of the bailing twine like reins. Poor LG was terrified at first...
As a teenager I used to do all sorts that I wouldn't even want to think of now! I was utterly oblivious to 'Health and Safety'... May be why Ginger eventually because so saintly though. He's seen it all!
And not 'wrong' but pretty awful for my horse... Someone told me once that singing would be useful for calming down my horse (he used to bronc; I used to hold my breath; it all ended in disaster over and over again). After that I sang to him ALL the time. And hey, it worked - he soon figured out that if he was well behaved, our rides would be shorter and I would go away sooner, thus ending the screeching and caterwauling.
I'm afraid I also use hacking as work time - will send texts/emails etc; plan work for the next day so presentations only need typing up etc. when I get home as content has already been decided - might take a couple of hours to plan so if I did that at home I'd never get chance to ride! Useful way to spend a hack though.
