We are near Bournemouth in Dorset and toying with the idea of breeding from our 2yr old Vizsla. I have looked on the KC website for breeders but there doesn't seem to be anyone local with a stud dog, can anyone recommend a website or alternative source of finding our bitch a mate?

Ps I post regularly on NL but this is my first time in the canine section so "hello"

There are some vizsla people on here (none whose names I can remember though!!! Maybe Echo Domino but I could be wrong....)

Are you certain you would have guaranteed homes for all the puppies? Has your female had health checks pertinent to her breed?
 
There are so many unwanted dogs in the world already.
Dont breed just because you want to have puppies from your bitch.
Think....
 
It is all pie-in-the-sky at the moment but will naturally go through all the necessary processes before making a proper decision to breed; I was really hoping to speak to a breeder to draw on as much information from their experience as possible in the first instance... thanks for your concern though, it is reassuring to know people will be picked up when they seem to be making rash decisions!
 
AHHHHH my dream dog a Vizsla, I want I want I want!!!! Ended up with a mongrel!! Well next time I've promised myself one!! Just hard to justify the price when there are so many mongrels crying out for homes.... Good luck and I want to see picys of pups!!!......
 
what sort of dog are you looking to use? a worker or a shower or something inbetween? im one of the vizsla people by the way hacking hack! really must start that clique!
 
Sorry, I know there are loads of vizzie people on here, my mind just went blank and I have sigs turned off - maybe we could do a sticky of people to ask question of, regarding a particular breed? People could add their names accordingly?

And ali_m - don't take this the wrong way but is your female of good quality?
I love my pair, they have great lines but unless something miraculous happens, I won't be breeding from either of them because, to be blunt, I don't think they are good enough.

The breeder you got her from will be able to lift this this but will certainly want to see her, have her hipscore results and make sure she is of 'breeding quality' before doing so. Or I would hope so anyway, its uncommon with vizslas not to have such a policy.

Temsik we got the 5 gen pedigree for Nala when we bought her and it turns out she has alot of show champs in her lineage, however her parents were both hardworking and succesful gundogs, so we have the happy combination of a very pretty girlie that just LOVES galloping around the farm and going beating with my Hubby (she hasn't been shooting yet as we were concerned about overfacing her). So I guess in answer to your question it would be really great to find another in-betweener, as their duality is recognised as one of their strongest traits?!

Hacking_Hack I have to hold my hands up and say I have no idea about her technical quality as we have never shown her- and our local vet calling her a "fine specimen" offers little reassurance compared to actual breed standards! Please pass on any advice you may have about how I go about getting her judged/graded in terms of whether she is good enough to breed from.

Yes from memory she does have a progeny registration restriction on her paperwork, and I am still in touch with the breeder, so I assume it would be easy enough to organise if we do decide to go ahead?

I know vizsla people/breeders are really keen to keep the quality of the breed at the highest standard so understand it is all highly regulated. I also recall being shocked at the level of interview we had before we could buy a pup from them, but the reasons behind their interogation have been such fun to unravel

Temsik would be the best person to ask, I have no idea about gundogs! Apart from whether she would show or not, she should have a good character and be physically sound, the two most important things you should consider!

If the show angle is something you are interested in, you could get the standard from the KC.
I don't show mine but both have traits that I wouldn't want transferred to their progeny because I doubt novice or, er, impatient (!) owners would be able to cope with them.

Do you mind if I ask what they are? I genuinely can't think of anything in Nala's character that I wouldn't be happy to pass on- and I don't *think* I am being biased!

My male, while undoubtably striking and very handsome, is oversized, has allergies, is prone to urinary tract infections and, like several of his littermates, has dog aggression (which I am training him out of!)

Female is very pretty (she would do well all-breeds) and trainable, but her character isn't as strong as I would like it to be (I think neurotic is the word!). She is also undersized and she has a front like Kate Moss

Neither have been hip, eye, elbow or haem tested so it's a no-go anyway.
 
Oh bless them! Sounds like you have your hands full with those two?! I was slightly concerned you would reel off a list of traits that I had never considered to be a bad thing (like jumping on the sofa, sleeping on the bed, stealing cuddles etc

Well they are totally different breeds and I am incredibly picky!

They are both great dogs, I love them to bits, but I won't be letting either procreate. We actually went back and got the female (they are siblings) as a breeding prospect but it isn't to be.

There is some great advice on here, and you are indeed asking for all the advice you can get in a very sensible manor....which I applaud you for......only one thing from me....please make sure you can offer life time back up for all of the puppies, for instance the fact you may get 3 returned at varied ages for any reason.

Echo Cala! Don't do it if you're not prepared to take them back at what ever stage of their lives. Even the best homes can go wrong.

I have HWV so will try to help as no experience with the smooths!

Go back to the KC or the HV Club website and speak to the secretary of the club, not everyone adds themselves on the breeders list.

You may have to prepare yourself to travel if you decide you want to breed, though there are more HV than HWV, there aren't as many around as something like a Lab or Spaniel. We've just had one of our bitches mated and mum had to go to Wales to use the dog she wanted - we live in the East Mids.

You will at least want her hips scoring, the lower the score the better but so long as it's below the breed average you'll be ok (I don't know what that is for the HV though!). You'll then need to find a dog with as good a score or better.

You're breeder *should* be able to tell you if she's a good specimen of the breed as that would be the breeder's basis for lifting the endorsement.

Realistically you should KC register the puppies and put endorsements on your puppies. You can reg pups on the KC website now it's fairly easy. You either need your own affix (if you intend to carry on your lines this is the best bet) or you can see if your breeder will help you out by doing what's called a loan of bitch, your pups will be registered under your bitch's breeder's affix or I think the KC will put their affix on for you.

Once you've put endorsements on your pups though, they need to go to their new homes with a contract of sale, basically explain to the new owners that pup has a restriction which means it can't be bred on from until you lift it (which you're NOT obliged to do!!) and you have to both sign and date a copy each - otherwise your endorsement is not valid. We also put in out contracts that pup is sold on condition that we want it back if there's a problem, what ever that is, and the owner can no longer keep the pup, however old it is.

all very good advice above. Its good to hear you are still in contact with your breeder too. Feel free to pm me with any specific qs u may have and if u want to pm me your girls breeding I may be able to suggest a potential mate. As said above though you may have to be prepared to travel. Height wise the breed standard for bitches is 21 to 23 and a half cms so your girl is spot on.
 
certainly a very nice example of the breed from those pictures. shes lovely! definately no conformation faults jumping out at me. Is that a catapillar on her in the third pic?! I kno what you mean about little photo opportunity! I actually invested in a better camera to get action shots! Although the pup we currently have even confuses that!
 
I'm not sure if a caterpillar is a cute nickname for it, or if you are genuinely asking if she has a bug on her? It is part of the dog!

It is actually 3 mini whorls in her hair that stop the hair lying flat. Neither of her parents had it and nor did her litter mates, but my OH thought it was adorable so chose her because of it. Surely that wont impact breedability?

lol yes i was geniunely asking if it was a bug! its not visable in the other pics! That i have to say is a question I dont know the answer to! I would assume whorls are not genetic but believe it would be fairly heavily penalised in the show ring as its not a characteristic of the breed. I will do some research if I can.
 
right just thinking about it briefly its occured to me that in ridgebacks the whorls at either end of the ridge are a breed standard and dogs without them are either culled at birth (weird breed club they have) or sold without papers and defo wouldnt be shown or bred from. I would therefore assume from this that the whorls themselves must be a GENETIC trait. Anyone else shed any light on this? I will do some reading.
 
I'm afriad I have nothing to add to this conversation except wwhat a beautiful girlie you have and also we know someone with a ridgeback sans ridge! He was going to be culled at birth but the said they didnt cafre about the ridge because they loved his personality and had no wish to breed from him!
