Out 24/7

Mine are still out enjoying this weather. It's bloomin cold at night so are rugged well. Wind is dropping next week so hoping to get a few rugs off. Loving it!!

I chucked them out and packed the rugs away. At least two are starting to look chubby already- need to get the exercise upped and the weight gain slowed!

Mine have been out 24/7 for past two weeks. Still in winter paddocks. Very little grass so feeding hay. Ground is rock hard. No mud. They are loving it. Next week in east Anglia it’s saying sun and warm. Following week temperatures dropping and rain so may be back in at night. My back needed a break from mucking out 4 stables before work.

My horses live out 24/7. We’re lucky in that regard.

I’m really intrigued by the notion that being in a field is tiring for them and they need to be stabled to have rest. Where’s this come from? Surely that’s not really a thing is it?
It would depend on how safe they feel in the field. If they are at the bottom of the herd or the herd is unsettled, they might feel safer in their own space.

In my case, my fields have only natural shelter and when the weather's bad and the ground is wet/muddy, at least one of mine won't lie down to sleep. This makes her extremely crabby, so in the worst of the winter, they come in a couple of nights a week so that she can lie down to sleep. Not an issue in drier weather.

My horses are out in a 46 acre field, in a herd of 15-20 horses, up and down very steep rolling hills. They’re fairly new to this yard - one has done 5 months of box rest due to injury and the other only had small surfaced turnout pens at previous yard. I might be wrong but I do think this set up is tiring them out at the moment, so I’m still bringing in on nights where it’s below 5° to let them have some hay and rest. Both sleep well, judging by the poo stained faces and shavings in manes!
