On the old girl I was 100% confident out hacking, jumping and day to day schooling BUT I had a dreadful fear of cantering tight circles on her - perhaps rightfully as she fell over once and broke my leg.

On Mr Schoolmaster I am 99% confident in an arena - 90% confident when hacking out (i was told he was a bad hack and have only done it twice with him - plan to do loads more this year) and the reason for this post to find out if i should just stay in his and my safety zone.

On the youngster I am 100% confident to do anything, at any speed anywhere!

How does everyone else feel? any one working on any confidence goals this year? or should we just move on from the ones that worry us a little?

im 100% confident on taz out hacking and 99.9% in the school as he can get realli nappy and has recently started rearing not anything that puts me off just you dont know when its comin

On my boy i am 99% on the flat and also at dressage competitions. Out hacking about 80% (he bolted flat out from fields near yard, up road and onto yard once hence why) and about 50% jumping (he has a massive jump and i am a wuss - got bucked off jumping as well sunday and taking him competing next sunday jumping - i have to be mad?!?!!). I want to work on hacking when the weather improves so i dont feel so afraid to go to shows on grass and the jumping obviously.

I wouldnt just move on from him although he does worry me a lot sometimes!!

i'm about 20% confident...
before i get on, i'm about 1%... once i'm on, it gradually rises to about 20%....

i used to be 100% on anything. i'd get on any horse, and do anything. then i got old/scared/plopped my pants...

it's sad. my goals for this year are:
-get confident enough to plan a ride and not stress about it for days beforehand
-do a small jumping class
-do a xc clinic

i'm such a wuss. it breaks my heart

In truth I have lost some of my confidence mostly in the last 7months. I am hoping to regain this, before this dip I would say I was 100% confident hacking out on my girl alone as I know her quite well, having owned her 18yrs this july.

On a recent visit, the Vet said her funny turn last year could have caused an 'altered perception', in regards to her increased spookiness. I do hope we can overcome this if she is sound to ride, got her special needs shoes done today so fingers crossed

Then hopefully we can sort out this spookiness by returning to hacking alone all the time which both she and I have gotten out of practice with.

ETS: Just wanted to add that I think Frequency and Confidence are inextricably linked.

Clipcloppop I so sympathise with you, I too was so confident when younger but now I always get anxious before hacking out even though I have never had any reason to really fear riding my boy, he is very sensible. I wish I could just feel totally confident I would do so much more, I really envy people who just don't seem to feel the fear.

I'm 90% confident hacking out,
about 50% doing dressage competitions
and about 1% jumping!!
I am really going to try to tackle my confidence crisis this year though, Jerry has never really given me cause not to trust him but I am a wuss!!

I'm about 68% but thats just because I've only rode him once and I need to get back into the swing of things after a year off

Before my break, I was 100+% on my mare, I;d get on her if he was bucking, messing about or anything so I'd like to get to that stage

110% on FB - we are so in tune the only thing that could happen is if he had an accident or was truly scared by something. Ari, I'd say probably 90% as he is still young and green.

I don't expect trouble and very rarely get it. I'm a firm believer that horses pick up stuff from you, so I have always tried to get on board at least pretending to be confident

My confidence goes up and down a lot. My mare started doing frog leaps in the arena when schooling. Some nights she does the leaping if a horse comes near or if someone walks past. It has progressed to mini rears on the spot but I think that might have had to do with her abscess under her chin coming back and it being sore.

So at the moment my confidence is about 30% and will go up depending on how well behaved Tia is going to be. I so hope she will stop the silly behaviour soon

She doesnt misbehave when im having a lesson and my instructor is in the arena. Naughty mare.

Am with you ladies on that, age has lessened my confidence for sure. I used to ride anything, anyhow! I used to ride out bareback without a care, not now, no way.
I did still feel 100% on my girl as I know her so well, but not for a while, just hope to god I can get my confidence back

About 70% on my horse, but I've only had him 3 weeks so still getting to know him. He can be a prat and do his best camel impression whilst jogging on hacks, but I still feel safe on him. He knows where his feet are and I doubt he'd buck or anything. He did put in one naughty stop in my first sj lesson, otherwise % would be higher. Hoping it'll rise to 100%. Lovely pony I just sold was 110% all the time!

i'm the same, i have no reason to doubt raff in the slightest. he's never put a foot wrong. he puts up with me clinging on and shaking... so i don't know why i'm such a scaredy cat. however, 2010 is the year i will stop... honestly...

I was 100% on my old boy (28) doing everything as he was such a good boy, lost him in october, but now have a 7 year old who I am 95% on the road have not done anything else with him yet just getting to know him through the winter

99% on Daisy. There is the odd situation when she might spook or throw a buck but even then I can tell when its coming so it rarely causes a problem. I know her so well that its like she's part of me when we're together.

Belle, FB's horse that I'm riding at the moment about 80%. Love her to bits, she's super willing and less spooky than D but her steering leaves a little to be desired and her canter transitions are a little chaotic! There were a few yelps in our lesson tonight as I feared I was about to vanish out the side door!

i am 100% on almost any horse I ride at the moment.
apart from the ginger mare who I have had to just say I won't ride any more as she just flat out scares me! (not just nappy, but nappy and malicious and I dont want her to knock my confidence on everything else!)

However, if I get on a new horse I am always 50:50 until they prove to me which way they are going to go!

hmm, good post!!
i've had my new horse bout 6 months and i too am getting older and confidence not what it was. i'm probably 80% hacking out and 90% in school. the more i do stuff like jumping/lessons/xc the more confident i feel. when i havent ridden for a while, like the bad weather we had, feel more like 30%, as long as i keep doing it i'm fine!

With Roo I'd say I trust her 100% but only have about 70% confidence as I'm a nervous rider. Nothing's ever happened to make me nervous, think its just because I started late. Roo is a star though, and she looks after me
smile.gif

I'm 100% with mine in the school and on the ground (he can be a nightmare to lead but I know the warning signs and stop it before he starts), however thanks to an accident I had whilst hacking him just over a year ago I can't hack him without me completely tensing up and him then getting worried so I havent hacked him since - have tried and got down the drive and couldnt go any further. This year i'm aiming to bite the bullet and just take him out with my instructor because when i've gone out once (properly) I know I will be fine lol.
The pony I'm bringing on I'm about 95% with. I've yet to jump him or canter him with me on him but despite his quirks I feel very confident on him
smile.gif

Hacking with his field buddy 99%
Hacking alone 80%
Hacking with a group of horses 50%

Going hunting for the first time on Sunday ............. 1%
