Over cautious owners

This was supposed to be a lighthearted piece of fun, not a personal attack!

[/ QUOTE ] So it is OK for the OP to make personal comments about the way the people on her yard manage their horses, but not OK for anyone else on the forum to make comments about the way she manages hers?

When we had this problem we assigned 'teaching times' where basically we tied the horse up, and hid out of his sight, but close enough so that when we saw him start to put his leg over the rope we could run out and shout 'no!!' Had to be very quick off the mark, but the horse was sensitive enough to see it as negative attention and stopped the behaviour completely within the week.
When I work with other peoples horse I am extremely over cautious, and take detours to avoid leading horses behind another, even 'friends' The way I look at it is if something happens I don't want to be in anyway to blame, and of couse I care about the horses and dont want them hurt.
Where my own are kept it is very quiet and the issue doesnt really arise as they do not come into contact with other horses on the yard. However I am really funny about my horses 'meeting' other horses, as they can lash out, or spin and kick so quickly, its not worth the risk imo.

The OP states he is tied up long enough to reach his food etc. on the ground. If the tie rings are 4ft off the ground and he can get at the ground..he is tied too long! A properly tied horse, I fail to see how he can get his leg over.

however saying that if Frankie wanted to sniff someone over the door, or vice versa, i would not be the kind of person to be like 'oh my baby keep away from him!'

I think that's quite interesting - I wonder how many other people have similar views??

To my mind that is massive accident waiting to happen. We never let horses do that.

[/ QUOTE ]

Completely agree with you - I would have turned the air blue if someone had allowed their horse to do that - Sirena would have taken it's face off at the very least

Thank God I keep my horses at home

Amy_May, he didn't have a stable for 2 of the 4 years I've owned him. He was a riding school horse for the 4 years I knew him before that - he was tied to the same spot in the tying area of the school for around 10 hours a day and you know what? He survived! With no ill effects or health problems or injuries or anything!

I don't think him being tied up is the issue, the issue is that you tie him up so loose that he can get his leg over the rope. We ALL tie our horses up at some point or another, it is just that some tie up safely and some don't!

Am I the only person that dislikes using twine to tie up to ?

[/ QUOTE ]
Nope. I used to tie to baler twine in the UK and in my experience the headcollars (leather) broke before the twine did. Nobody ties up to twine here, and nor do I. In a real emergency something always gives! (and it's not the horse)

I'm in the over cautious group, and never tie up a horse long enough to get his/her leg over the rope, I also don't use twine (use a bungie) after my horse got frightened pulled back and nothing broke apart from the fence and she went galloping off being bashed by a fence rail

There is a big difference in a bit of fun to take up the time at work and personal comments on a forum. You were given very gerneralised instances which can apply over every yard, the rugs etc, but that wasn't enough for the people on this forum, they had to pick up on what you thought as a weakness and attack. She TRUSTS her horse, she knows him better than anyone. If anything happens to HIM then on her head be it, and she'll pay for it for the rest of her life. She knows this. If any of you have an unpredictable horse then you are not paying enough attention to their signals.

And did I join this forum just to gas on this topic? You better believe it! Why ask? Do you want to pick up on that too? Attack somebody who is trying to put some reason across and tone down the thread? If you want to go off topic, then by all means start a new thread "How short to tie up your horse" for example. That is how forums work

Actually the OP made it very clear that she was referring to people on her particular yard.

And I don't think it is off-topic at all to discuss how horses should be tied up on a thread discussing whether some owners are over-cautious or not.

As for all this dramatic talk of 'attacks', we are merely having a discussion, which is what forums are all about!

Perhaps you need one of these:

Sorry, you have absolutely misinterpreted my comments - and others made. In no way was I attacking. I was commenting purely on what I thought to be a dangerous practice. The OP obviously keeps her horse in a way in which she feels is acceptable, and it works for her. At no stage were my posts attacking, aggressive or of a personal nature.

You on the other hand have come on here all guns blazing - which is a shame.

And because some of us don't agree with some of the things the OP has said she is now having a paddy.

Aren't we allowed to have differing views???

Why can't I, or anyone, disagree with what someone else may say???? Happens all the time.
