Horse has to wear over-reach boots all round in the field.... horse specialises in taking over-reach boots off in the field....cue lots of ‘aaaargh!’ noises & tramping round muddy fields to retrieve them!

Do the neoprene type ones stay on any better than the ordinary rubber type?

Horse also destroys over-reach boots regularly(splits the rubber, pulls off Velcro/straps etc) so I was hoping to avoid expensive boots but I seem to be replacing them every fortnight at the moment!

have you tried leaving him in pull on's? I do think the velcro ones end up with inherent weak points with the stitching etc.

The pull on rubber ones are the best for staying on, but not the best if they're getting split etc, and also not practical as they're a PITA to get on and off!

I found the neoprene/nylon combo ones best in terms of resisting destuction, but you're back to relying on velcro to keep them on.

My mare managed to trash her last pair of neoprene boots within 24 hours by ripping the Velcro off. Id say the rubber pull ons are the best; another vote for the Equus though - they seem to last the longest.

Oh dear I hate the pull on type as they are so awkward to deal with, but it does make total sense that they’d be better at staying on :) thanks for the advice I’ll try the Equus ones

The problem that I have is they rub my horse even though I make sure they are mud free when they go on. I use the ones with a lambskin to for work but they wouldn't stand up to use in the field. Any ideas?

I use woof wear kevlar or boots for the field as they are the best i've found for keeping shoes on, and whilst they are expensive, if the horse rips the velcro off, you can just sew it back on again.

I prefer the neoprene ones to the rubber, the LeMieux soft shell ones are good. We don't bother any more, but those used to last our two hooligans quite a long while.

I use LeMieux Neoprene on one as he demolishes anything else and rubber velcro ones or Roma deluxe on t'other. Horses for courses.

Have a look at tintpets.co.uk

A bit of an odd website but they sell rubber over reach boots with velcro for £2.13 - decent quality too!
I've order a couple of times from them (10x pairs at a time) and they have always arrived pretty quickly.

I get through a lot of pairs but at this price I don't mind so much!!

What about the all in ones boots, or is he doing it through confirmation brushing or standing on his own feet while resting. You could try a sausage boot as well to keep his feet away from the boot but most like not much use at faster paces.

Definitely neoprene/kevlar ones! I've used Premier Equine, Le Mieux and Trizone and would rate them all (probably pick the PE out of the 3 though). Horse wears OR boots whenever he is out on the field as prone to over-reaches. These have all stayed on through the depths of winter/mud, and are only replaced every few months when velcro finally goes, or he catches one and damages it.

Rubber ones lasted about a week, and he over-reached very badly whilst he had some rubber ones on!

I buy several pairs of the shires neoprene ones so they can be removed and hosed off each night and worn on rotation. IF I keep the Velcro mud free they have a better chance of staying on (although we have lost one so far) and as they do sort of dry out they seem to last longer. I bought 5 pairs at the beginning of winter and have 2 full new pairs untouched and 5 individual boots on rotation at the yard. One is dropping to bits now but I’ll probably get another couple of weeks out of it before I give in!

My main recommendation is to buy either Hi-Viz or the brightest colours you can find, so when they come off in the field you are in with more of a chance of finding them.

The kids all used to joke that next year we'd have field of over-reach boot trees. :D
