I went to see my youngster last night and had overreached on the side of his heel. It was quite deep, like a cut. My no skin flaps. I gave it a good clean with hibiscrub and then put purple spray on it and turned him out. His field has got quite short grass and is not muddy at all. Went I went to see him this morning, the scabs had come off a bit due to the wet grass and it was weeping a bit. I gave it another clean and put more purple spray on. What cream/gel should I get to protect it? Also would it be worth getting overreach boots so he doesnt catch it and opens the cut more while it heals? I be a bit worried that the boots could rub but the cut is quite low. Can you bandage that area? He is not lame in the slightest but a bit sensitive when I put purple spray on it.

I am also a bit worried that it will scar as he is going to be a dressage horse hopefully :) Would it be worth getting manuka honey once it heals up a bit?

Sorry for the long post. Please help anyone?

My tb did this twice. No scar i put over reach boots on 24/7 he doesn't have any shoes on either. I put camrosa or sudocrem depending what i had in. Yes manuka is brilliant although i never used it. I have seen a horse require stitches as she over reached and basically tore her front foot half off not got a scar.
Don't bandage it, i would put boots on tho they shouldn't rub if fit well and cut not on band.

Our horse recently had a nasty over reach injury while wearing over reach boots, it too looked like a normal cut, but in his heel. It has now grown out and is actually a split in the hoof, so I wouldn't worry about it scarring, but you'll have to keep an eye on it for a while. His was worse as he was actually lame for a little bit, I bandaged it for a while to keep it clean and to stop the flap getting rubbed, but if yours doesn't have a flap then you'd probably be fine just putting a boot on it. I would use a pull-on boot if you can get one on, without the little no-turn bit at the back, as then there is nothing to rub the injury if the boot does move round. I just cleaned the wound with salt water and put on a healing spray, as I wanted it to breathe as much as possible with the boot on.
