Owner hasn't microchipped- need advice fast sorry!

According to the new law that came into force on 6 April all dogs over 8 weeks must be microchipped. I am looking to buy a new puppy and found some crossbreed puppies. Which are £400 which is a lot for a cross. But anyway. Said puppies are just over 8 weeks not microchipped as advert says owner will need to microchip and vaccinate, according to law if not vaccinated by 8 weeks owner could face up to £500 fine (may be per dog). I would really like a puppy so don't want to annoy breeder but at the same time don't really want to pay that much for cross breed, plus it haven't been microchipped when they should have! What's the best way of gojng about this? Thanks

Take it to the vets and say its 7 weeks and 6 days? I doubt anyone will query it. The law isnt really designed for responsible owners immediately microchipping their new puppy, its to encourage breeders to do it and to penalise people with adult dogs who havent bothered. I suspect it will be like the horse passport fiasco! £400 sounds ridiculous to me, but if you really want the pup then I wouldnt let it stop me, but I would be thinking long and hard about paying £400 for a cross breed puppy whose breeder cant be bothered to get a microchip :/
 
Very true however but not sure why I should have to pay for microchipping on top of an expensive puppy. Obviously I will but considering by law the breeder should... Would it be a bad move to point it out to the breeder? (As essentially I could report it - although I wouldn't) in hope they will maybe microchip or reduce price
 
I think I would approach it by saying something like 'really keen to get puppy home but obviously can't do that until you have had him/her microchipped...' and see what response you get from that

Would also be dubious about paying so much money for a cross breed with owners who can't be bothered
 
If you think the pup is too expensive maybe put an offer in? Or find one you feel is more reasonably priced. Or is this particular puppy one you want?

If they are supposed to be chipped before the age of sale then I would be pointing that out. Does the law have any comment onyoung purchases?
 
Thanks will point out and if they don't microchip/ reduce price will walk away as it is a lot! Yes all dogs must be microchipped once 8 weeks of ages. And they are obviously not planning on chipping as it says the new owner will need to! So yes breeders must microchip
 
if breeder cant be bothered to microchip or do first vacc then they are unlikely to be well bred, healthy pups - I would be suspicious at price you will be getting puppy farmed pups..
 
The puppies are labXrottweiller and are actually £395 for a chocolate female and the only male them the other 4 female are 295. £295 seems more reasonable for the male as females are generally more expensive. I guess it's because it's the only male (interested in the male dog)

With my last dog I did a lot of research into puppy farms so am pretty sure I know what to look out for but obviously they are usually covered up well! However there are load of pics of the puppies in the garden with a Labrador (the bitch) and two adult Rottweilers so to me it looks like an unplanned litter and owner clearly doesn't really care hence not getting them vaccinated etc.
 
so ask yourself then why buy a cross bred from two breeds with potential for hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia and no health tests sand pay over the odds for it? You could get a similar cross puppy from a rescue easily, or a purebred with health tests for not much more!
 
Whats this post about? You don't want an unmicrochipped or crossbred dog for £400. So don't get it?

5 pups at roughly £400 each is a massive profit for a "breeder" that wont microchip. I almost get the vaccination thing, but to flout the law for what has to be either an accidental breeding or one done for money smacks of a money making enterprise! You could get a similar stamp of pup from a rescue centre or for minimal cost from preloved etc. Have they done the health tests that should be done?

Honestly, walk away! Its not a specific cross, performance bred for a purpose. Its a mutt, they may well grow up to be lovely dogs, but you could well be lining the pockets of someone who isnt actually a puppy farm but who isnt that far removed from that!
 
I quite understood but it's basically saying I don't want it what do I do?

I'm glad you are not considering buying it now. I do hope the pups get good homes but it's a fact of life that if people pay people create :(
 
As I read the law, an owner has three weeks to get an unchipped dog chipped IF CHALLENGED and if they don't, they get fined.

Frankly, it is stupid law and as my dogs never go off the farm, I won't be bothering although I have the chips and have been legally chipping my own dogs (for export) for over 20 years! The chips were never registered as for exports the chip is merely used to identify that the paper work applies to that dog. It doesn't make any difference anyway as the registry that issued the chips moved to the USA and as I understand it all the registrations have been lost!

Does that remind anyone of the similar fiasco with horse passports?
 
Whether purebred or crossbred puppies still cost a lot to raise - from feeding the mum to be to feeding the pups as they are weaned. First vaccination should be done by the breeder as 6 weeks is the suggested age for that first important shot.

Puppies should really stay with mum till 8 weeks too so the breeder should be microchipping.
 
Regardless of the microchip issue, please please please don't buy this puppy.

Rescue centres are overwhelming full of dogs needing homes. Lots of rescue centres will have litters of pups. I understand an adult dog from a rescue centre may come with issues (I should know, I have 2) and not everyone might want to take an adult dog with 'baggage'.... But there are rescue pups out there that will be chipped, vaxed and will come with a voucher for free or reduced cost neutering.

Please don't line the pockets of these people when there are 1000s of dogs looking for homes...
 
I would absolutely love to rescue a dog, however i couldn't unfortunately due to have a current dog, cat and rabbit who are both from rescue shelters. I tried to adopt ages ago from all my local shelters and they wouldn't because of this! Which I somewhat understand but dogs are often so adaptable!

It might be worth trying some smaller, locally based rescues as they are often more reasonable about homing to people who already have pets.

Kind of what I thought and you are being ripped off if you buy a mutt for £400.
 
Yeah, lots of nice rescue pups with microchip and spay/neuter included in the adoption fee.

I can kind of see why people buy pedigree dogs (you know exactly what you're getting, you can show etc) but if you don't mind a crossbreed, a shelter seems like the obvious place to find one?

Have a look on dogsblog.com. You can do a search for puppies (under 6mo) most are from small local type shelters and there are literally hundreds of animals on there of every breed imaginable.

After owning a string of defective Pedigree dogs with papers a mile long I'll stick with my hassle free mutt any day - a mixture of three breeds, he is as smart as paint, healthy and confident.

I love him to bits. I was given him but his siblings were being sold with first vaccination for almost the equivalent value - $600 - 800, Paying good money usually means that the dog is not an impulse buy. Mutt or Pedigree - bot cost the same to raise.

I looked on there-nice little 6month old cross bred bitch but she's been spayed already! I think thats awful tbh. And a lot of the pups are from Europe.


The rescues around me are full of staffy x somethings, used to be collie cross somethings but good old fashioned mutts are hard to find. The reason I got the last rescue is she caught my eye as a good sort of mongrel (and she is ace) but to actually find a pup that isn't a jackerpoo or malkita is quite difficult IME.

Really cannot believe people are advertising unvaccinated, unchipped mongrels for such a price!
Any breeder has a responsibility of caring for their animals correctly. This fad for mongrels dressed up as designer breeds is ridiculous. I would not touch such a breeder with a bargepole. 3400 for a mutt? crikey!
