Owner wants to return the horse i gifted to her

No, I've spent a lot of time considering whether it would be possible for me to take her back but it's just not. I'm on a livery yard and there's no free stables for her, my baby sleeps in the car while I do my other horse so there's no way I'd have time to do 2 horses before she wakes up. Money is also an issue and I'm back to work in a few weeks and i'm going to have to pay someone to help me out a couple of days a week; I could never afford to do that with two.
I need to go and see her really but I always have baby with me and owner works very long hours so it makes it difficult. I do need to see with my own eyes how lame she is. Apparently, she's only lame at trot and is on devils claw but otherwise no pain meds.
Will be interesting to get the blacksmiths opinion because all her original problems were caused by collapsed heels and crappy feet. If the conformation of her hooves has started to slide again then then it might just take time to get them right. I don't know, time will tell I suppose.

As far as I can see you only have 2 real options for your situation.
1) Let the "friend" suck it up, she bought the horse knowing the issues. But you dont know what will happen to the horse.
2) Get the horse back and PTS.

Agree, But I think from your posts you know in your heart what the right action will be, the only way to guarantee this horse will not have an uncertain future. Noone 'wants' to pts, but sometimes it's the kindest option for all concerned, you shouldn't feel guilty as the horse will be unaware, and you are ultimately putting its welfare first, unlike your 'friend' who seems quite willing to send the horse off to an uncertain future, despicable of her to put you in this position.
And FWIW re charities, why should someone expect a charity to fork out for a horse they no longer want?
 
Hi everyone. I thought I'd update you all as promised...

By some miracle the new owner managed to find a sanctuary to take my old mare. She thoroughly checked the place out and has been to visit her to check she's ok and all is well so far.

Fingers crossed that this sanctuary are all that they seem and will care for her for the rest of her days :)

Which sanctuary? For your peace of mind someone here may know of it.
 
Tell me about it. I was very sceptical and told the new owner so but she visited the place and said it was lovely and at the end of the day it was her decision. She's been to visit her and said that she's settled and happy. She's visiting her again this weekend so all I can do is hope that all will be well.

As I said, people here will know of a lot of sanctuaries, and a reputable one wouldn't mind being named I'm sure. A good advert for their kindness. If you want some peace of mind about where the horse has ended up then we might be able to help.
 
I don't want to name anyone on a public forum. I honestly did as much research as I could before she left. Even if I was told something unsavoury then there's absolutely nothing I could do about it now. Her owner is happy that she's in good hands and all seems good so far.
 
A sanctuary are you sure? Please let us know which one as this is a bit impossible to believe. They are rammed full at the moment with rescue cases not someone else's horse that cannot afford or even bothered to look after. Make sure it is a sanctuary there are a minority who will take any horse off your hands and they sell them on again. Hope the horse is ok and maybe they will get her right again. Please please be careful.

Personally the funicular in me thinks this is a cop out tithed on the OPs part or the buyers part.

Hoping my cynicism is wrong but not wanting to give the name of the sanctuary just things sla bells when ninvbit doesn't mean anything in the longterm nobody could do anything just from the name of the place without the name of the horse.

As long as your happy OP I suppose that's all that matters.

Not being funny but she would say this wouldnt she! Sorry but I just do not believe some wonderful sanctuary has agreed to take the horse, have you been to see this place? I would have to go and see for myself I know you gifted the horse but I would want to know where the horse had ended up.
 
The person I gifted her to has been to the sanctuary 3 times in total and has been sending me photos of the horse looking well and turned out in a nice field with post and rail/electric fencing. She's has a lot of contact with the sanctuary and is happy that she made the right decision for the horse. It's quite a distance to travel but I'll be visiting in the New Year.

As everything seems well I'm not looking for advice at this time (said in the nicest possible way) I simply wanted to update as promised.
