Hiya, brought my horse in from the field tonight and he was quite cresty and wouldn't let you touch his neck... flinched even if you just stroked his neck and seemed in discomfort (dull eyes, just not himself)

he does tend to get a bit itchy so usually loves nothing better than for you to scratch his mane.

his feet are cold and no laminitic stance. couldn't really feel if his crest was solid as wouldn't let me close enough.

would do carrot stretches so not thinking neck injury (??)

he's recently been moved to new paddock with lots of grass so really worried it is laminitis.

what could it be? a wasp/bee sting and allergic reaction has been suggested as well but surely that would only be one area and swollen?

has anybody else heard of a painful crest? HELP!

Hiya
the only thing i would say it may be laminitis as the cresty necks but as you say if his feet are cold than im not quite sure.?? to be on the safe side just reduce his feed and grass etc and see if that will make him his normall self if not than if he gets worse def call a vet

hopefully this helps.?

thanks Hayley. left him in tonight to keep an eye on him. really annoying that we can't really restrict our grazing at our yard. there is a paddock for the ponies/laminitics but it has absolutely nothing at all in there and he's the type that will jump a fence/barge through a gate to get to food.

I'm fairly sure that in the early stages of laminitis the feet will be cold as blood supply is cut off to that area. But it is so long since I've studied this that I've completely forgotten what you're meant to do about it! Try to restore circulation somehow! Sorry I'm useless

, hopefully someone else will know.

dont go by feet temp has he any digtal pulses? Are you sure he has not been bitten or knocked on his neck witch is causing this?

Swollen\sore crest is an early warning sign of laminitus. They can get it before there are any symptoms in the feet.

I would keep your horse in until its gone down and then consider using a grazing mask to restrict his grass intake if you can't put him in the restricted paddock.

I would also consider the vet, especailly if it doesn;t go down quickly.

Hi,

My friends pony gets sweet itch and we bought him in yesterday morning and his neck had gone abit cresty/swollen up and he was very tender to say the least, this was caused by a number of fly bites, they all came to a head last night, so all the pressure released. Cleaned him up and hes a happy pony again now. This makes him feel really down in the dumps.

maybe he has been bitten and taken abit of a reaction to it. ?

hope this helps.
