I've only had my new pony a few weeks and I've recently tested her for worm egg count. It has come back really high in the thousands therefore the vet advised me to use the 5 day panacur with Bute to help with inflammation and try to prevent her from collicking.
I'm worried sick that she is gonna to colic due to the high worm burden.
Does anybody have experience of using this wormer for the same reason?
Thanks x

It is the best option as it attempts to avoid removing them all in one go and generating a possible impaction etc. It also might not remove them all as there is quite a lot of resistance to the active ingredient.

One of mine arrived with a really high worm burden, I had similar advice, actually I think we did a sachet of strongid-P first, then the 5 day panacur a week later, and then retested couple of weeks after she had completed the 5 days to see what we were left with.

Try not to worry :)

Thankyou both, I'm planning on retesting after the panancur as theyve advised me to use another wormer in 21 days. However should I still expect a high worm count after using panacur ?
Thanks x

The Panacur 5 day guard is the best wormer for initial use in these circs, it's what the rescue charities use on their newbies. I'd expect the count to be much reduced 2 weeks after the course is completed, and after a suitable interval you can give a more modern wormer such as equest to shift what's left.

What was her count? One of my apparently healthy 2yo foster fillies threw up an unexpected count of c4000 epg despite having been on a regular worming program and looking sleek and well :eek3:. I contacted Kristy at Westgate labs and she was super helpful in devising an ongoing worm count/worming program which was refined/adjusted it as the results came back in. We got on top of the b00gers. Westgate ran a feature on my filly on their FB page :).

OP has that covered...
