Part loan arrangement - what would you do?

Thank you.

I'm glad I could help. Looking at it objectively (I have my mum head on again), the part loan may be something you may wish to continue once your baby has arrived.

I work full time as does my husband and with a baby sometimes there just isn't enough hours in the day, so a part loan works perfectly for me. I have a really good agreement with the owner which works for both of us. I don't know what your circumstances are but having a sharer maybe something that you want to continue so it would be worth waiting for the right person to come along.

If you don't mind him having a few months off then can you put him on grass livery for the last few weeks of your pregnancy and the winter? I haven't got kids but I would have thought that you won't get straight back in the saddle and be where you are now so you can both "come back into work" together?
I give my 12 year old the winter off every year and he always comes back better for having a break :)

I love that your pony has the winters off.
I beat myself up every year for my failing to keep mine going over winter but with working full time, lack of a lit schooling area and a horse full of beans at the weekend which makes for un-enjoyable riding it never seems possible.

Maybe I should take advantage of the fact with have absolutely no choice but to rest this winter and if it works well then why not make it an annual thing hey :)

I'd always hoped for a long term loan arrangement to be honest so that pony can have two loving mums and I can fit all the baby stuff in.
This is another reason for being apprehensive about him going to another yard - there's no way I'd pay more than my current livery rate to be on a yard that isn't as good so he'd have to come back to me as soon as I'm back in the saddle (nothing has been said about livery charges in the long run but if she's negotiating over livery and shoes now when she'll have sole use of him then I'm sure she'll not want to pay all of that when time with him is shared).
I'd love to find the perfect sharer so if you know of one in my area please send them my way :)

Please tell me if I'm being paranoid or if this really is as odd as it seems.......
Just been browsing loan adverts on preloved and it appears that the lady that wants to move my horse to her yard to loan has her own 14.3 horse (mines 15hh) advertised for part loan at £25 per week and also her 2 small ponies advertised for loan?

I would be paranoid too. If its making alarm bells ring now then I'd say no and look for someone who fits in with what you actually want to do. I don't think she sounds like the right person for you both if I'm honest, it doesn't sound like you wold get the best side of the deal.

Good luck with your pregnancy and I'm sure you'll find someone soon.

For me it sounds like she wants to have her cake and eat it. I'd be telling her to take a running jump to be honest. I would worry less about keeping him in work, I'm sure a freelance would also be able to help by giving him a spin on the lunge, and it sounds like you have people would be willing to help you ride. Have you tried putting an ad on local facebook pages.
To me there is just an alarm bell going over this one.

I think you have enough concerns that if I were you I think I'd pursue other options. That said I have my own place and I would be happy to have a part loan of someone else's horse and would prefer keep it at my place. I would see the contribution of keep/livery, not just bedding and feed but also the horse's 'share' of all maintenance costs, as a fair contribution if you paid for shoeing. If I was to take a horse on part loan at my yard I would see you as the owner and not a livery client so I would fully expect to have meet your requirements re care rather than you accepting any livery arrangements that I had with other clients.
I think you need to voice your concerns and also be clear about how you wish to share chores etc before you have the baby and also give an expected but not confirmed idea of how you would like to split the time, riding and chores once you have the baby. I guess the issue would be if you are not happy with something are you approaching her about it in her role as sharer or her role as livery owner? I would expect arrangements about turnout, stabling etc would be her decision as yard owner ie the normal things a DIY client would speak to the YO about but the care and day to day activities of the horse should be totally as per your requirements as the owner of a share.
Honestly, I would ask about the other horses going on loan, there may be a logical reason and from the start of any loan/share you need to feel free to question anything you are concerned about.
Good luck, it's not an easy decision to make but you've been sensible and given yourself enough time to find a good solution you can feel happy and relaxed with.

If you're happy with her I'd go for it but put a good contract in place including any specifics on management. Paying for shoes keeps you involved - your choice of farrier etc. My pony is out on full loan but I wanted to keep with my farrier so I pay for shoeing :)
