Passport worries

Has anyone been fined or got into trouble for not changing ownership within the 30 days? I got our horse 11 months ago, and had all good intentions to send off her passport. Filled in the details etc. I did notice though that the dealer we got her from didn't have their details in there, just the previous owners who sold her to the dealer. (All above board and in contact with dealer and previous owners) Anyway right from the first week we were out and about with her and needed the passport for travelling. So it didn't get sent off and forgot about. Had a big lorry tidy/sort out and found her passport and remembered I hadn't sent it off! I have done today, but now I'm worried I may get into trouble. Has this happened to anyone on here?
 
I've had my horse for 10 years and never sent the passport off. I've written my name and address in the owner section, but if anybody ever checked with the issuer they wouldn't have the record. When I buy my new one I probably will, just because the rules are tighter now.

There should be no repercussions. There was a case recently of a horse box being stopped by Trading Standards with police support and being asked for the passport and they had it with them so all was o.k. You are wise to get it updated just in case.

Thats good. I'm more worried about the breed society not stamping it or giving me a fine/telling off for not sending it in sooner!
 
Most places don't even need you to send it off anymore. They just send you the stickers and update the information on their database. I did one early last year and just filled in the forms and a week later they sent me the stickers to put in. I changed a name and ownership on that one and didn't have to send it away.

That sounds so much easier and a much better way of doing it. The only reason of sending it off is to get the stamp. Which is a big worry at the moment with the way the post is. Ours is with the WPCS.

I bought my horse during Covid and his passport issuing authority didn't even send me stickers, just told me to fill it in myself by hand. So I did! It looks very DIY....having said that his previous owners were doing Pony Club and all sorts with him for five years, having never updated the passport. So I wouldn't worry.

I’ve fairly recently sent one to WPCS for change of ownership, we have had the pony 3 years!! I phoned them to apologise for my tardiness, fully expecting a telling off but the lady was lovely and passport was returned promptly.
 
I've never done change of owner on a passport, except for one of a specific breed where there were things I was excluded from doing unless I was the recorded owner. Neither the seller nor I am in the passport of my current house.

I'm panicking now as didn't even think to change ownership when my dad brought his part owed ex racer home for me. I've had him 8 years and haven't changed ownership think it's still down as the trainers. How should I go about it???
 
I’ve had my old horse 18 years and never changed the name in passport, been registered with BE and BD in that time with no issues.

Registered with weatherbys? It will be in the passport, whoever issued it usually. If it is then you can easily change it online. https://www.weatherbys.co.uk/passports/passports-gb-registrations/thoroughbreds

I recently did it for mine…he was still technically registered to the owner he had in Ireland several years ago 🤣

Hardly anyone bothers within the 30 days…or even years! Don’t worry about it. The issuer is not going to go back to you and ask why you haven’t done it already!
 
I bought one if mine during covid and didn't want the passport getting stuck in the post or an empty office so I didn't send it, and now never have.

The passport isn't an ownership document, but I think it's the only way to link their microchip to you so if horse is stolen it'll come bavk to you when found.

So really I need to get it updated!

The microchip will be registered in a microchip company's database. It should also be registered in the Central Equine Database. If your horse goes missing and is then found this is where the finder/vet etc will check when the horse is found, just like with a found cat or found dog. It would be next to impossible to find the owner via the various passport agencies.

Yep check the database and make sure the horse is registered, I did and mine wasn’t as it was an Irish horse. So got her over stamped here by another breed society and then the number was recorded on the database

So how do I update that database? I thought it was the passport agencies that did it. Surely I can't do it myself.

I bought mine during Covid too; being a terribly rule abiding person 😆 I contacted the passport agency immediately. They emailed telling me to update the details myself with a pen! So I did. His passport was not a particularly tidy or complete document to start with - and it's even less so now - but no one has ever queried my Biro scribbles.

If that's the welsh pony and cob society, they were quick with mine.
Take photos of key pages just on case though.
Last 2 passports haven't had previous owner in. I think a lot of people don't bother.
 
In all honesty… I think it’s irresponsible to not change the ownership details.

Few years ago I had a horse that hadn’t had ownership changed for two or three owners, and the horse was a European import. I sent the passport off to pio in U.K. for ownership change/overstamp.

Came back that the rules had changed since the passport had been issued, and needed to be sent back to country of origin to be sorted. This change could have previously been done in the U.K., but again rule change meant it had to go back to EU.

When the passport came back all the previous vaccination pages had been taken out, as the pio in eu “couldn’t guarantee they were authentic.”

So thanks to several lazy owners I had to pay a fortune to get the new bit of passport and start all the vaccinations again.

Had they had it done it this country it would have been free

Hello! I have just had the same realisation that I have also never sent off my passport for change of ownership and it is now almost 3 years later. I am going to call the WPCS tomorrow to speak with them but please could you settle my worries by letting me know what ended up happing in your scenario?

I’m really concerned about getting a fine now! Thank you in advance!

I hope you don't get a fine and the passport company can help you out
