Maybe Scotty has overcooked it a bit?! I’m enjoying the course but hope everyone makes it home safe.

ETA not that I’d jump any of those fences - should have said I’m enjoying watching it so far.

This isn't the top of the top though, and not sure where it sits in levels of toughness - it looks like a Scottie course!

Shame it clashes with Mondial du Lion and it's end of season tbh - would love to see the best over this course. Lovely to see BC out again!

What’s the CoH? I could imagine that he’s a lovely guy.

Im sorry that Away Cruising didn’t finish his career on a high. He’s been such a great horse to watch over the years and I’d have loved to see a big win for them.

I agree with Teapot, I wish this event wasn’t so close in the calendar to Mondial/Pau. But I guess it would be hard to move. It gets really hot there in summer.

It looks a lovely event. But seemed very big and very technical - a real 5* (I only saw Ollie’s round, so could be wrong. I’d like to go, but it’s such a difficult time of year for me to get away ( same for Pau).

Just popped in here to see if anyone had been following Maryland and Lion.
It’s been storm force winds up here so a great excuse to just watch eventing! Followed both venues as the timing didn’t clash as Maryland was in the evening for us.
Lion 7 yr olds got very exciting both xc and SJ. Well done Gemma!
I have watched Maryland since its first year, it started off a tad easy… relatively speaking but I felt this year was asking a bit too much. Who would be a course builder! Well done to those who completed, hope Oliver gets the credit he deserves as he is a bit of a ‘marmite’ character. Tim fabulous as ever and dear David just must get his 5* win one day. I was pleased Away Cruising was only sore from a lost shoe but very sad Harry then didn’t get his other horse round. Such a brilliant Burghley for him but a long way to go with two horses and complete on neither!

I thought Le Lion through up an interesting discussion on the use of clones. Both the winner and the 5th place horse are a clone of Chili Morning. Is it really a breeding champs if clones win? Is cloning still breeding? Do you need clones when the stallion and his parents are still alive? Is this the future of the sport, all clones of a few horses?

I don’t mind cloning- it's so prohibitively expensive it's not like we are going to be seeing multiple clones in every class of the sport. For me it is a really interesting exercise in comparing riding styles and training. Both Julia and Gemma have clearly done an excellent job but the horses go quite differently.
Le Lion lost its way as a breeding championships a long time ago, it's just a young horse championship. Chili Morning was an excellent horse and his clones are really franking that form. He was also sub-fertile so it will be fascinating if they do breed from any of these and whether they have more success getting offspring on the ground
