Just out of interest would you pay to ride a horse on a hack?

he’s been rode once in 18 months. He lives out and They only visit him once a fortnight. He’s never hacked alone while he’s been with current owners and instead of loaning him out or paying someone to ride him, their bright idea is to have someone pay them for the pleasure of doing them a favour and exercising their horse... is this actually a thing?.. Like booking in different people on 3 hour time slots like a business?
I think it’s a crazy idea and I don’t know why but it’s got my back up today.
ive come away from the yard I keep my younger at actually fuming.. like I said I’ve had a bad week but honestly would like opinions before I open my mouth any more than I have already ?

I think it’s a stupid idea, but equally stupid are the people that would pay money for such a thing. I wonder who’s going to be responsible when there’s an accident? Perhaps all the money they make on their time slots will cover the vets bills?

I do sometimes think this about loaners too. Not only to some pay to hack out, they also pay for the privilege of mucking out! Plenty of people do loan horses like this though.

Are you sure they only visit once a fortnight? If he lives out and they go up at different times of day, you might just not see them.

Re the paying to ride - this is essentially what sharers do. Not sure I'd fancy the ride on this horse, but it does sound like they are advertising for some sort of share arrangement?

100% sure, your lucky if they visit once a week. There’s always someone there and motion cameras.
I said they should share or loan but they mean to book people in on 3 hour time slots for £15. Anyone who wants to go, not a single person, lots of different people. Xx

I suppose it would depend on how many 'riders' they had. If it was just 2 or 3 a week nice caring people regularly maybe it could work - if it was a case of standing in a field doing nothing or regular rides and some TLC it might actually be good for him.

I agree he needs the TLC so why not just loan to a nice person? I doubt she’ll get many, if any to be honest. I certainly wouldn’t pay to ride him. Xx

I would but probably not in those circumstances (mostly because I am a novice). Eventually my share will work out at about that cost wise (less if I do chores), which I would never get from RS but that is with an owner who is very much involved and taking great care that myself and horse are safe together before venturing out on our own. She has also made sure I have my own rider insurance. If it's the same people and competent riders maybe it would work out well - horse gets exercise, riders get some hacking. Unless they mean literally booking in random people?

I’m constantly shocked at things I see and hear at the yard I’m on, I used to let it really p*ss me off but now I just smile and ignore as long as it’s not upsetting my safety. Let the YO/YM deal with it I doubt either would want caught up in the legal ins and outs of hire and reward on their premises.

I can very imagine people paying to do that. Whether they should or not in those circumstances I don't know - as has already been raised there's issues with insurance etc. Plus doesn't sound like the owner plans to vet riders to make sure they will be safe/sensible with the horse?

they won’t vet any riders. It’ll just be if you want you can. Xx

well you would hope not. If it’s allowed to go ahead I don’t think I’ll stay there any longer. I can’t cope with the idiocy Xx

To be honest, he isnt your horse and you dont know how things will pan out. There maybe some lovely people out there and it may work out ok.
I would see what happens before you give notice.

This is a welfare issue in the first instance that needs to be discussed with your YO.

its been discussed. They’ve ended up in a similar situation to what I was in on my own property a few weeks back which I’ve thankfully resolved. Seems theres one on every yard! Xx
