Pedal Osteitis

Our SJ had pedal ostietis - I have the world’s largest collection of x-rays and MRIs over the lifetime of this horse. So large I’ve given them to a specialist vet practice to help train their AI models on the progression of such.

If you reach out I can give you the details of a veterinary practice who has developed methodologies managing for pedal ostietis. He will work with you remotely, and is one of the few vets I’ve encountered that can actually work effectively in an ecosystem of allied providers such as barefoot trimmers and farriers. Gun at using data sets as well to educate so you know what your options are.

He is also a researcher at UQ and has some great lectures you can get.

Our horse did best in composite shoes whilst she was competing. Her hooves grow fast so it was a 3-4 weeks reshoe cycle. Expensive but it worked.

She is 24, competed in high level SJ until 13, then a Pony Club horse until 19 and then retired. Her feet still need a lot of expense even as a paddock ornament.

I got a 3rd opinion 🤣 it kind of came about naturally, if that makes any sense.

Vet #3 said no pedal osteitis. Also said that his hooves looked quite good and confirmed sole and angle measurements. All within healthy range. She was very detailed in explaining her analysis.

I cannot believe how utterly freaked out I was initially. I also don't know why the first vet was so alarmist? I've had some odd experiences with him, but not on this level.

Horse is actually walking quite well over the gravel, including the bigger stuff. I'm impressed. I did add additional copper and zinc to his diet, and a different topical sole product. I've also been slowly walking over different gravel more so he's not just on grass and in the school.

Jiogulan is meant to help circulation to the hooves, though I'm not sure you need it now. I used it for a pony with a brpken navicular bone.

Jeff Newham is really helpful - the glue/rubber mix has really helped one of ours.
