Pedigree Dogs Exposed Three Years On

I considered TBs feet but couldnt really draw a direct comparison, are we breeding them for a specific trait that gives them crap feet as a by product or is it just that sometimes they have crap feet?!

Deformed inbred cobs? Seen a fair few of those...

The fact is that flat-faced breeds are at a high risk of breathing difficulties and heat stroke. The fact that apparently some pugs can't lie down in comfort due to this is awful! And while these dogs still suffer these problems then the situation will not have improved enough for me.

I am going to walk my dog in a while, and he will run about, jump, stick his head down rabbit holes and goodness knows what else. It is my belief that every dog should be physically able to do this.

I have been short of breath due to this chest infection, and believe me it is scary, even when you know why and that you will get better. These dogs can spend their whole lives feeling like this. And that is very wrong IMO.

Well isn't there one or two lines which produce fantastic horses (Northern Dancer, Native Dancer), but can also produce crap feet, so it's a trade off. I might be talking through my hat though :p

It seems to me that the Pug is inflicted with several problems breathing & curvature of the spine.

The breed standard is responsible for this, the breathing due to the flat face and the curvature of the spine due to a tightly curled tail.

This breed standard needs to be rewritten because every dog as a basic right needs to function as a dog and this is clearly not happening with the Pug.

Breed standards have been around since the acceptance of said breed / breeds to respective KC's. It is the breeders and judges who must not reward extremes of particular characteristics within each breed standard to suit show ring fashion. Remember breed standards originated when a breed was originally developed for a purpose and we should not lose sight of that function. You should not rewrite the standard, the KC's need to stamp out the judges and breeders rewarding the extremes.

I think it depends 1) when the breed standard was written, one assumes for the pug it was long after its somewhat old origins. 2) what it was written with the intention of creating, is it not possible some of them are not accurate for what the breed should be.

I think the pugs used to be muzzle short, not muzzle non-existant though which perhaps prooves your point (it is now 'relatively short' which I should imagine is open to lot of interpretation, relative to what!)

pugs with noses look much better to me :)

think if you look back at how these dogs used to look 100yrs ago,( they showed pictures of the Bulldog and Dachshund )they look very different to how they look now.

If the breed standard is causing a dog to be unable to breathe then it needs changing.

Tb's are not born with poor feet, they become bad as a result of high cereal diet and shoeing from a young age before the foot has fully developed.

I just watched the documentary and thought it superb, better than the first one.

Foxy, am I wrong in thinking that Northern Dancer and Native Dancer have been blamed for poor feet?
Like in the same way as I could say that x dog was blamed for soft ears or y for soft temper etc etc etc.

Not having a go just wondering if I understood wrong.

I've not heard that CC, there are hundreds of thousands of TB's descended from those so not sure you could really pin anything on them.... :)

I've just been having a look at the Dutch Kennel Club website and there is actually a specific page on there (http://www.raadvanbeheer.nl/en/purebred-dogs/cavalier-toets/ regarding the CKCS and on the Dutch version there is also a section regarding the health of English Bulldogs as well. So why do the UK KC/UK Breeder Associations seem to have such a backwards view to breeding out health defects? Surely if other countries can get these regulations in then it is possible in the UK?

Personally, I feel if any animal is so highly bred that it cannot reproduce, but to an even higher extent, cannot breathe properly... serious measures need to be taken to do something about that breed. Having to do surgery in order for you dog to breathe properly is simply disgusting!

thing is, in Asia this is still how they are bred, it wouldnt be that difficult to save the breed in europe/the west by importing from asia.

Did you see on the programme the picture of the working Neapolitan Mastiff and the show one? One a smart looking dog, the other a mass of loose skin and sore looking eyes. How do you get to that kind of extreme?!

I have just seen on FB that the 5 month old GSD puppy owned by a pensioner, who was described as having a 'deformity of the hindquarters' by the now KC chairman at Crufts and was asked to leave, has since received a hip score totalling under 5 and has scored 0.03% under the Penn Hip scheme and clear elbows and is clearing scale jumps with ease.
As can be expected, this responsible breeder who health tests and who used to work her dogs at working trials, wants nothing more to to with the KC.
Nice work.....

A friend has a Sharpei x Springer (accidental mating), he doesn't look unlike those traditional sharpeis, hasn't got too much wrinkling at all, but he has still had real problems with his skin.:(
ester, I'm sure CC will answer in detail but no he wasn't judging, the pup was part of a Good Citizens demo team if I recall and because it was loose in the hocks, like many GSD pups of that age, he decided it had a "deformity" and his lady owner was asked to leave the show.
