Peeing whilst being ridden?

Does anyone else with a mare find they just will NOT pee whilst being ridden? Pooing no problem but if I take her out for a long ride she never ever pees. She'll wait till she gets back to the field desperate with a bursting bladder. I wish I could get her to wee before we go out. She's 21.

Not a mare but my old share horse is the same. In the 20 years I've known him, he's never weed with someone on him. There have been times when he's been dripping wee by the time we get home but he still waits until he's in the field. He also won't wee in his stable and in an ideal world will only wee in his field. He has to come in at 6 every night (yard rules) and can go out again at 7am. By then he's desperate. He has at least trained himself to wee when he sees you coming to get him in so is coming in with an empty bladder. When he was on box rest we'd take him to a grassy spot and if he was desperate enough he'd wee but if not we'd have to take him into the field to wee. Luckily he's the world's most polite horse to handle even when on box rest so taking him into the field with all his mates loose around him wasn't a problem.

We've tried everything but nothing makes a difference. He's 26 now and we do worry about his bladder or kidneys being affected but it hasn't happened yet.

My ShareMare won't wee if ridden. She rarely poos while riding either! She will wait to wee in her stable/field but is happy to poo anywhere she feels like as long as no one's onboard!

Ted The Twit is the opposite, he has specific pee verges on each of his hacking routes. He arrives, stops, puts himself on the grass and spends forever weeing and farting merrily, before happily carrying on with his hack.

My mares don't and are bursting when they get home from hacking. Luckily the competition mare will pee on the truck.

Archie always had a wee stop in the same two places out hacking, both just before our canter spots. We used to joke that he was lightening the load. If he was on a different route so didn't reach his pee stops and he was desperate enough though he'd stop traffic to pee in the road. No shame at all.

I told my pony off for stopping to poo when I had just started riding him and instead of walking on he never pooed or peed again when ridden, saving it for when we got back or got off for a break. In his 20s he suddenly started peeing on a ride and that was the sign of him getting Cushing's.

The old RS mare on which I first learned to hack would wee two or three times soon after leaving the yard. It was a strategy to reduced the length of the hack possible in the hour slot allotted. I have not known any other horse wee while I am hacking.
My current share may wee as soon as she gets back to her box, but I dont know how to tell her it is OK to wee while we are out.

Mine has never peed under saddle, and I can count the times she’s pooed under saddle in 8 years on one hand. She also refuses to pee in the field and will only go in her stable which is a bit of a problem when they’re supposed to be living out in the summer!

Gosh interesting, thanks everyone. I see I'm not the only one. I think the mares may find it more difficult than having a dingle dongle to drop down?. I know mine takes a few minutes to even get in position. Funny aren't they.

Just remembered an old RS mare I used to ride, who would wee as soon as she got into the school before you got on, nearly every time. We used to joke that she was scent marking her territory!

My Connie literally used to take the pee with his sharer. At the first opportunity he would stop, wiggle his back end and shuffle his feet a bit as if to pee and then stick his head down and eat. He would then try it on again a few times before actually having the pee. It took her a while to cotton on he was being a manipulative pony. DP does pee on hacks but it has to be the perfect place with no splash back.

My mare won’t wee under saddle either. It’s very annoying as she becomes a very tricky ride when she needs to go!

Mine are the opposite. They pretend wee on hacks but only where there is tasty grass. They assume the positon, I drop the reins, they eat and rest a leg, I peer under to see if anything is going on, tell them to get on with it, they take another step, assume position again, rinse and repeat.

I am apparently good at training my 3 horses to pretend wee to either snack or avoid work. I can do much training wise but I can do that!

I have the opposite.. when my mare starts to drift to the right it's because she needs a pee and then we have to find the right spot. I liken it to checking out all the stalls - she needs a clean seat, working lock and plenty of loo roll.

Hacking out with instructor for the first time, when halfway J needed to go. Instructor started saying "more leg / straighten her up / she's taking the Mick" and absolutely would not believe my protestations that we needed a wee, until the perfect spot was found!!
