Ok, so Mr Fips (4yr old percheron) went off the the vets last week to have a full lameness work up, x-rays, nerve blocks the lot. So they couldn't find anything in his legs so they then thought hip as there is definate lameness behind, so to see if he had a mild pelvis fracture they gave him a rectal and pushed on his pelvis from inside! Now is it me or is that a tad barbaric!? Could be just that when I broke my arm they did the "does this hurt?" *poke the broken bone* routine. Of course it f'ing hurt! Imagine if it was broken! Even doped I should think he'd kick the crap out of the vet (Admittedly he did get Martin the vet and send him flying at another point....) Thankfully, or not, it's not broken but they have no idea whats wrong with him so it's 4 months off for him with a question over whether we keep him...

So has anyone else had any experience with pelvis fracture or the examination for them?

I just think its a horried way of eliminating it... poor bugger has been vets twice since we got him on valentines day.... 1st time he had surgery on his willy and now he's had this! No wonder he wasn't happy about loading!

it's a common way of checking for a pelvis fracture as they are often not visible on a ultra sound scan until they have begun to heal when you can see calluses forming on the bone . the rectual exam is to asses the surface of the pelvis to feel for damage . hope that helps

My friends horse fractured his pelvis not that long ago and he is fine now and back in work. I will see her tomorrow and can ask her some more details if you like.

just another point , Well Armed won the Dubai world cup after a pelvic fracture three years earlier , the prognosis is usually quite good for most horses

Blossom Broke her pelvis in the field. It was obvious something was very wrong and she had to be carried back to that stable (Lucky she was 11.2) She didn't have anything like that, but the vet knew she couldn't be moved to check it out properly so just trusted it was, and face her a 15% survival chance.
On the subject of broken arms, they made me hold it up vertically, even though bones were sticking out, and sure enough it just went more bananaish. Yuk.

(Sent from sandringham from chestnut ponies central where a certain 'Priceless' would like to kick his stable down)

Hi , I'm in the same position . my horse is lame and has been since end Apr . The Vet has done 2 internals ( which he wasnt impressed about ) . But still not sure if it is a fracture ! He's never had any sore spots , heat , swelling , lumps or bumps etc etc . He's had turn out 24/7 ( so he could walk it off if it was muscular! ) and is on box rest ( 9days and counting ) at the moment and no better what so ever ! I think I'll need to have some nerve blocks done so at least I can narrow it down to an area of his leg ! Vets coming tomorrow to have ANOTHER look and we'll see .

i had a horse with hing leg lameness which couln't be diagnosed by n/blocks and all sorts of scans - in the end the horspital said they suspected he'd tweked a muscle deep in his quarters that they just could not identify. Box rested and came fine after that.
