People using your stuff - livery yard moan

I have no problem with people borrowing my stuff so long as they:

a) ask first
b) put everything back exactly where they found it and in the same condition when they are done.

Not much to ask, surely?????

Its is all relatively petty, but the inconvenience of stuff not being there when you need it is extremely annoying.

E.g.: I bring my horse in the other day to find that my stable has no haynets in it. Both my haynets had strangely migrated to another stable - wonder how they did that? Haynets don't usually have little legs - do they???

Fly spray. I buy expensive stuff because it works. If you want to use it, buy some of your own.

Feed buckets. They are mine. I use them to feed my horse. don't take them.

Know exactly how you feel - so far this week gone missing from my stable or box are:

1 x John Whitaker Airflow Headcollar
1 x John Whitaker Lead Rope
4 x gamgee
4 x fleece bandages
1 x mark todd fleece rug (which I actually know has gone on one of the showjumpers of the yard owners)
2 x bottles of shampoo
1 x bag of plaiting bands
all of the clean straw so neatly piled at the back of my stable as Jack has been out in the field this week cause lazy arse staff and other liveries can't be bothered going to get another bale in or get some extra from the shed!

and that's only this week.
 
I thank my lucky stars that our YO has now instituted a separate yard for us two DIY'ers and we are away from the thieving hellhole that is the main yard. They'd nick anything that wasn't screwed down, then deny all knowledge and claim they'd bought it themselves.

I too don't care as long as people ask, I love to help out and lend things, but I want them back!

Big, lockable chests and storage lockers are your friend.

It is so annoying isn't it!

From the other side though...

DIY liveries, if you don't want your stuff to go missing, why not put it away instead of leaving it strewn across the yard and piled outside your stable for the staff to deal with.

Also then maybe we could sweep up once in a while without having to shift 4 filthy, stinky rugs, some rotting bits of leather, a bucket full of mould and spiders and various bits of travel equipment.

(disclaimer: not saying anyone here does these things but it makes me wild when our liveries complain stuff is missing when they have left it lying about for weeks!)
 
I don't mind people borrowing my stuff as long as it is put back exactly as it was (ie if I don't notice it's been borrowed, I won't mind). That applies for not asking as well, if it's not possible to ask then as long as I don't notice then fine (but ask if you can). What gets me is when people just "use" my stuff, don't put it back, break stuff and don't own up and replace it, or "borrow" things that are technically "un-borrowable" such as fly spray, etc. (because you can't replace a couple of squirts of spray!!). I also hate when people borrow things and then try to pass them off as their own (those are MY stirrups, they cost me a small fortune, do NOT try to tell me you just bought them because they are obviously well-used!)
Horsey people are the worst with borrowing... sorry, just joining your rant! I sympathise!
 
OMG and do you pay for full livery ? thats awful. What does your yard owner do about it ? Mind you, shouldn't matter whether you are full or DIY, its still not on.
I think in a lot of cases its not peoples intention to not put stuff back, but on the other hand, I would never take something without asking. I try and keep my stuff locked up or things such as winter rugs, various bits of tack at home when not using.
Most people are just lazy - can't be bothered to go to get fly spray, shampoo - very annoying when you've paid up with your hard earned cash.

What cannot be seen/accessed cannot go missing.

Or a polite notice on your stable door is another good thing!
 
Ah i can sympathise with you on this.

Just last night i was looking for my mane comb which i suspect liveries have taken, mane comb i have used once and bought only last week!! Will be writing names on EVERYTHING tonight and tomorrow now as am getting sick of it.
 
Yes, I agree, thats just a blimmin cheek.
We are a very small DIY (8 horses) so its easy to track down stuff and generally its only brushes and lead ropes that go missing.
I tell you what does bug me though..... when I've bought my own forks and barrow, brush etc, only to find that someone else is using and then looks at me in a funny way when I ask for them back, because guess what, I want to muck out NOW and not have to wait !!

i'm like you don't mind so as it goes back............ if not , I do a complete hissy fit...........
i've found you only have to blow up once and problem sorted...... BUT you do have to pick the right thing to blow up at.
Mine was a 'wan+ker' exercising his dog in my horses field, and my sensable horse chased his dog (fair game in my eyes, as lose dog was 'rabbiting' ) and owner tried to have go at me to control my horse in field. Er......................... then folks saw at yard how direct I can be....

So i've never had to do that again

Sad to say that this does not work, I frequently found items clearly labelled in black marker pen with 'BEAUTY' in the stable of, for example, 'PRINCE' with Prince's (or whoever's) ginger bloody hair all over them.

Best one is when they take things that have your name on them and write their horse's name on too after crossing yours out. I mean, seriously...

I'm DIY which actually annoys me even more with the straw thing. As for the rest of it - most is "borrowed" from my box. I feel I should be able to leave his headcollar with leadrope neatly rolled up on the hanger outside his stable without some thieving so and so taking it and not putting it back. I wouldn't borrow someones things without asking so don't see why anyone else should feel that anything of mine is fair game. Oh it riles me - and I've had a go at yard staff and other liveries before about it only to be told "oh but you get it cheaper cause you work in the tack shop" - SO FRIGGIN WHAT I still had to work for it and buy it out of my own money - not yours.
 
I don't mind anyone borrowing anything of mine as long as it goes back.
Our yard is pretty good in so far as nothing gets nicked but "tool" borrowing - grr it drives me nuts.
When we went there we hadn't got anything so we bought shovels, forks etc to ensure we had our stuff. The number of times i go to muck out and can't find our things. They're marked up with coloured tape so pretty obvious - having to ask for your stuff back to muck out your own horse is a little irritating especially if you're in a hurry.
 
We don't really have that problem at our yard, all liveries have a lockable tack cage & the only things left out are head collars, rugs, hoof picks & haynets. & they rarely go mising.

Some time ago there was one DIY livery who was on the yard for over a year & she didn't own a barrow or mucking out fork, nor did she own a saddle but she managed to muck out & ride!!

Someone was stupid enough to let her use her saddle, & she actually managed to break the tree!! & she used to just wander around & take an unattended barrow & fork for her use. Thankfully she's gone now.
 
I have a bright orange wheelbarrow with horses name written all over it. I took it round to the stable with brushes etc, left it just outside while I put neddy out, came back and it was being used!!!! Got the 'I didn't know it was yours'. FFS, do you think I'm that stupid??? Few choice words were said. Everything else is locked away, do I need to start chaining the wheelbarrow up?

I was told I had overdone it when I tipped all her mucking out onto the yard & reclaimed MY wheelbarrow. May seem like an over-reaction but it honestly was the final straw in a long, long saga!!!
 
Don't get me started about wheelbarrows! YM and I have the same wheelbarrow - they have 2 wheels and are big, so are easy to manoever and you can get a lot in them. They were not cheap! Everyone else (5) has small wheelbarrows and they are forever using our big ones if we are not around even though they are named and it is known when we are down! We don't mind them being used if we aren't there, but when they are being used under your nose it is just RUDE!

Someone took my WOW girth off my saddle over the weekend - I know because it was undone both sides yesterday and on top of my saddle. When I put it on I realised that one of the rubber bands that allow you to tighten the girth one handed was missing

I found it broken on the tackroom floor and no one will admit to having done it

Arrggghhh, Weezy that is so annoying!

I really need to find my own place. As I said, I'm not precious about my stuff and am happy to share with my friends, but its when things just grow little legs and wander off that I get annoyed.

I used to have to padlock my shavings fork and broom so I would be able to muck out in the morning, otherwise another livery would take them........at 6am you just don't need it.

Yep, I fully agree with this. Although my notice would not be polite.. along the lines of "P*SS OFF. GET YOUR OWN F*CKING STUFF". Subtle aren't I?!

Thats nothing, I came down one evening to find one livery riding their horse in MY dressage saddle and MY very expensive Albion bridle that they had helped themselves to out of the tack room cos another livery had said I wouldnt mind?!!! Fuming wasnt the word!! They havent done it again

Luckily only four owners on my small yard, but one thing that has bugged me is my broom, silly I know and I don't mind people borrowing it the odd time, but I've hardly used it and I've since noticed it needs a new head! There are very few hairs left on the blimmin' thing, and it was a great broom! So now I have to fork out and buy another one.

I know they wear out but hasn't been used by moi for a while!

OMG! I would have committed murder! I keep my saddle and bridles locked up for insurance reasons (shared tackroom), but I don't think anyone would dream of using them.......I hope.....

We had a livery that would steal something of someone then give it as a present to another livery a month later - I think she used to enjoy the fights that broke out when the first livery confronted the 2nd livery and accussed them of stealing
