What was your routine with them?

I've just put my boys back in their usual field only after a 2 week break on poor grazing and will be using a muzzle on my just turned 3 year old. I left it on him for 2 hours tonight and he spent most of that time wondering round, and tried to graze about 6 times but gave up! I took it off with it being the first night out in the field for a while but not sure when its best to leave it on?

Overnight or in the day?

In the day there are people around to see he's ok but Im thinking night as its quieter and more settled?!

Help!

Hi there, i totally understand your worry about him not coming to you but if you give him a little low calorie treat every time you put it on he should just accept it as routine! I was going to muzzle my rising 3 yr old last year but decided to have her in a starvation Paddock during the day when the grass is most Fructose (dawn and dusk) it worked quite well! I'm hoping this year now She's backed i'll be able to keep the weight off with exercise! Good luck oh and my friend swears by greenguard muzzles she says her mare is 100% happier in hers and she has to wear hers pretty much 24/7 :-)

I use it during the day. My mare did the typical sulky thing to begin with - after poking treats etc through the hole I left her to it for a couple of hours (so she was a bit hungry) then took her to some perfect yummy grass that she really wanted.

You need to find some that is just the right length to poke through enough, but not so long that they just flatten it with the muzzle. She was so keen to eat the grass that she persisted until she worked out how to get it.

After that it was no problem and she wears it all day during spring/summer - must dig it out now as our grass is just starting to come through ;)

I used one on an old lami shetti I once used to have/ended up with. She was only turned out in the daytime and it was a god send so the little girl could have fresh air and stretch the little legs. I sort of showed her how to eat through it and once she got the idea she was fine. Being a Shetland though, not a lot was going to stop her getting those blades of grass lol.

molly (my small 11hh welsh a) has hers on all day, took her ages to figure out how to eat with it but she's a bit of a porker and then she lives in at night with a very small holed haynet. she wont live out full time untill we sell her

Ours are turned out over night in the summer in in the day, just waiting for that to happen, Its hard to know whats best, when they are out overnight they are out longer, then the sugars are not so strong, out in the day you can keep an eye on them.

I've used the shires bucket one for years, I did try the shires greenguard one before they updated it in 2008 and found it didn't work, am thinking of trying the updated version though.

Thanks for all the replies! :)

Well I left it on today 8-5 and had people check him through the day and he was just standing around, poor boy!

Its the shires or roma bucket one but my greenguard should be arriving soon- I plan to use both alternately.

I could put him in a smaller area- my field is sectioned in half anyway but my other horse tends to panic if he can't get to the other one but its an option...

Just one other thing lol, do they rub when wet?

We used one on a extremely greedy and laminitis prone Shetland. Woked an absolute treat meant he could be out with 'the big boys' all day. I would say tho that you may need to put it on slightly tighter than you would perhaps like at little greedy ponies especially find every way possible to get the muzzle and their headcollar off!!!
