Afternoon all. A friend of mine is looking for a new horse and she's been talking about Percherons for a while. She has a (retired) Clydie so is no stranger to draft breeds, but has never actually ridden a percheron. There's not many on the market (unsurprisingly) and even fewer which meet her specifications (big and youngish :D) so it's a bit hit or miss trying to find one to try it...

We were talking about how it would make sense for her to ride one or two before looking seriously (i.e. before waiting around for one for ages / wasting seller's time etc.) - just to be 100% sure that she really wants one / that she wouldn't be better looking for a Clyde-cross or something different. Now for why I'm rambling on here:

I know there are places which specialise in Clydes and Shires etc where you can hack out on them etc - is there anywhere which has Percherons you can ride?

Bit of a random question and probably not well expressed, the world's a bit upside down right now as I had a disagreement with my cob and concussed myself last night :o So please excuse any irregularities in the ramblingness of this post :D

I think Cumbrian heavy horses only have Clydies which she obvs has plenty of experience riding - unless I'm missing something

Doesn't want mare, sold, too small. Unsurprisingly have seen all the ads as can use google! Thanks though :)

btw, that black lad in cardiff looked perfect

Adventure Clydesdale is the only all clydie riding centre in the UK. Cumbrian Heavies has Clydes, shires and Belgian draughts but sadly she's never had a percheron in.
Have you checked the British Percheron website for anything for sale or contacted them to put you in touch with breeders. Also you could try your local heavy horse association.
Finding one that is broken to ride for a 'taster' session could be difficult. Even in ridden heavy classes seeing a BP is fairly unusual.

No idea...didn't have a browse properly so no idea what they have I'm afraid.

Then why link to it? Sorry, I know I'm being grumpy, but I specifically said I know such places exist for Clydies and Shires and was asking about Percherons, since they are not the same

Not heard of Adventure Clydesdale. I'm rather a fan of Clydies so may have a look for myself ;) But yes, I thought this was the case

We're keeping an eye on the site, but yes, heavy horse assoc is a good idea, ta!

I feared this might be the case. Really don't see many of them  Thanks anyway... :)

Because I should actually be doing work right now, but HHO is distracting me as normal, hence the short replies on everything currently. People put links to online sites all the time on horse searching posts, which, they equally could have seen them themselves already too. Internet's a big space, one may go a miss which someone doesn't happen to click across. I won't bother next time. I saw a couple of other places which said Clydes only/driving only/etc, however, that specific link I noticed had a few different heavies on there so thought I'd post it just in case for anyone who did have time to have a proper browse, or even ring up to enquire if they knew of anyone/anywhere with anything suitable perhaps. Good luck in your search anyway.

Fair enough - I didn't particularly appreciate the "quick google search" comment, since unsurprisingly we have done that and found no answers - hence I was looking for any insider info / personal knowledge on here really, but perhaps you didn't mean it that way? Regardless, never mind and thanks, I think we may need that "good luck"!!!

ets - by "mean it that way" I thought it was a dig on the basis of my previous encouragement of posters using the search function or 30s on google before posting. I think I may be getting a bit hyper-sensitive on here  - don't mind me!

Haha Casey... Last time I went to France the ferry cost the same as a single journey on the London Underground so y'know, not an unfeasible option I guess...! I shall pass the suggestion on and see how it is received ;)

Thanks :)

I know he's smaller than your friend wants but he's gorgeous, I think she should buy him to prevent me from lusting after him :D

You're not to far from me are you? My cousins girlfriend has a Percheron x that I'm sure she'd let your friend have a sit on if that's any use?

He is cute isn't he! I'd rather a littley myself - less height to scramble onto / fall off! But I'm short compared to my mate ;)

I'm Essex so not far at all, friend is herts so even closer... That would be a very generous offer - I'm sure my mate wouldn't say no, but don't want to put you (or cousin's gf!) under any pressure!

How young is "youngish" and would your friend consider a Percheron X? :D

Saw this on one of my local FB pages:
QUALITY HEAVYWEIGHT HUNTER TYPE 3YO GELDING FOR SALE.
Currently standing 16.3hh with 10 inches of bone.
Percheron x Sportshorse, Homebred, Very genuine, Untried, Unspoilt youngster.
£1800ono (Abergavenny)

There's a pic on there too I could link to... But not sure if it's too far away from you/wrong age to consider...

Never ridden one myself but I've always had a sneaky liking for them... :)

If you find a good source let me know!

I used to work with percheons to ride and drive and fell in love with them. Fantastic personalities every one, comfey to ride but still sparky.

If I come into a bit of money one is first on my list to make me a lovely R&D
