I am considering purchasing a Pessoa as I need to develop my pony's top line and improve his way of going. I don't think I have ever heard anything but good about the, but I just wanted to see what people's experiences are.

Also, are any of the cheaper imitations up to the job, as the proper Pessoa is pretty pricey?

Thanks.

Personally, I would look into the equi-ami. Very similar system but in my opinion, a lot kinder and easier to use. I found the Pessoa is a bit jabby in the mouth - the equi-ami doesn't do this. My boy accepted the equi-ami much more readily than the Pessoa :) and he works really well in it.

i have a pessoa and find it works really well, takes a bit of adjusting to get the size just right though. had it for years and a bit has come loose that i keep having to retie. i have heard there are many cheaper imitations, i would give them a go if they look the same to be honest, as quite pricey. but havnt used them myself so not sure about the quality

Okay, thank you - I'll have a look at those too.

Do you think it would fit a 14hh, fairly short coupled, short necked pony okay?

Ooh, the equiami website is interesting... They do quite a few options in terms of size and quality. It says it fits from 13hh upwards, so no worries there.

I got the kincade one much cheaper and love it, i dont normally like gadgets but love this one. Easy to use very good for strenghtening the back.

I looked into these a while back and was advised against and when you really watch them being used the action of the hocks pulls the mouth seemingly punishing them for activating their hocks:confused:

This, go for an Equi Ami :) Much kinder and doesn't see saw/sock them in the mouth.

I hate pessoas it's too easy for a clever horse to learn to block and lean I however i do think the equiami solves many of the issues I have with pessoas so if you want that sort of tool that's what I would look at.

Well, that's 3 votes for the equiami. It's certainly not unreasonably priced.

I see they also do a ridden aid.

I think, so long as I choose the right system and it's well fitted, it could really help us as this is a 13 year old horse, who has never been highly schooled and who is rebuilding muscle after back treatment, so it gives me the chance to reteach him the correct way of going and build the muscles at the same time.

As with any new thing, don't work him for too long in it to start with. The instructions say to tighten the equi ami after a warmup HOWEVER I would not do this until you have used the ami for a few weeks to allow the horse time to get used to it. It's what I have done on my welsh mare who was not used to working in that way before nor had the muscles to do so built.

Or, if not buying the ami, whatever you do buy. :)

Good advice, and I also have a welsh pony, so I will be coming at it from the same sort of angle as you. Did you find it worked for a welsh pony then? At the moment he thinks round and down is what you do when you need to itch your nose on your leg and long and low is for attempting to get at grass!!! Short and bulky is the order of the day in his mind.
