Well....

i'm not normally one for gadgets, but was wondering what people thought of this product and would they use it to help lighten a horses forehand and get him using his backend more actively, or should I just stick to good old schooling

Jumping on your thread (hope you don't mind!) as was about to post one myself asking same question, and also if anyone has tried the cheaper pessoa copies and if they work just as well?
Thanks!

i echo the last post- have been using mine for 3 years.
Develops stomach mucsle topline and really helps horses learn to "step through" I cannot recommend it highly enough.
Its part of my weekly exercise regime with the horses. at least 2wice a week I use it.

I had the Equi-trainer version of the Passoa. It worked very well. The horses soon start to work deeper and rounder.I personally prefer the copy's with ropes instead of the nylon ones.

I love my training aid and was using it very regularly until we had our injury. We got a cheaper copy from ebay but it does exactly the same except less £££!

I use it twice a week, and the physio recommends using it twice a week too, especially on the lowest setting with poles on the floor. Fab piece of kit and the horse has to work for itself . Ive got the Mark Todd copy, wouldnt pay full whack !

I have the "TopFlyght Topline Activator" (or something like that!) About £50 on ebay.
Either way apart from being fussy to put on I have been really pleased - even speaking as someone fairly anti-gadget! Just seeing my little mare "get" in 10 minutes what I'd struggled so hard to show her was worth the money. I even long-reined in it.
She's managing to transfer what she's learning on the lunge into her ridden work - no lengthy sessions, no fights, arguments or hassles, just a happy horse being re-schooled into a better outline.

My horse has been prescibed 12 weeks lunging in a pessoa by the vet to improve his back muscles and its made a huge difference to him. He's got fantastic topline for the first time ever. The vet says he recommends it a lot for horses with back problems and after kissing spine ops.
We're on week 9 now so obviously the novelty is wearing off and I'm hoping to start riding again soon but I will carry on using it a couple of times a week.

I have an Equibalancer from eBay, the ropes are thinner than the original version but everything works fine. Check whatever you're looking at on eBay comes WITH a fleecy bit for around the horse's bum! Alternatively pay £10 less and make your own for 50p lol!
As for how it works, I know loads of people who swear by them, as do I (I'm hoping to use it on my mare once she's recovered from her tendon injury as it will get her weight off her forehand and her bad leg). Fab gadget, although obviously don't use it in place of schooling, use it as an addition.
