Just up the road from is a livery yard, where a pony is kept that is ridden by a mature woman who I tend to pass quite frequently when riding my boys out. The pony is cobby and looks fairly quiet. Rider wears a young horse tabbard and has a rather stylish necklace around its neck! Whenever I pass her she pops it in a gateway until I pass (at a walk) I have suggested that we ride down the road together (to be sociable - but she always waves me on) Last but one time I asked her the age of her young pony - the answer was 7 years - I pointed out that the one I was riding was 5 and the one I was leading 6 years) Today I was out riding and leading from some way off and could see the pony napping back to her field. I approached very quietly and suggested that she tuck the pony in behind my two to give it a lead (what I really wanted to say was give it a whack, or at least kick it on.....) but I was being tactful. But sadly she decided to give up and rode it back to the yard. The pony has really sussed the rider out, which is such a shame as it does look very sweet. I also noted that the pony is unshod, so I guess that coupled with the necklace thing that there is some sort of (un) natural horsemanship thing going on here too. Such a shame that people embark on horse ownership when they are so inexperienced. If only she would find someone to ride out with her hacks would be so much more pleasurable.
I too am of mature years and certainly am not as confident as I once was - but thankfully I still remember how to get the horses going in a straight line and to kick them on when they think about being naughty or nappy.

Well bully for you!!

Im sure this person pales in the shadow of your superior horsemanship!!

Leave her alone - what do you care - you carry on being perfect and the rest of us will stumble on in inadequacy thanks!!

She didn't want to ride with you?

I wonder why?

Because I expect she finds me a bit intimidating as my nags are quite big and fit and are racehorses, not because I am unfriendly or stand-offish, in fact I am really quite friendly and chatty! But even so I do hate to see nice ponies being spoilt!

Personally I like to make horses get on and do the job, obviously this woman doesn't feel happy doing that otherwise she would have taken you up on your offer, but why is it your business what she does with her own horse?

You said it!

I have to say that your inference that she is IH minded means she doesn't know anything is horribly patronising!

It's probably because like it or not - you probably came across as a bit of a know-it-all...

Or maybe it was the fact you were riding and leading your racehorses (perhaps for a sheike (sp) whilst doing sudoku and the irish flaming jig upside down in your pants?

Sheesh - she may not be very good at hacking out but for all you know she could be a really good horsewoman in other respects...

Seems like she is scared of her horse 0.0

Does she? Maybe she knows her horse better than the backseat driver (rider?) Maybe just maybe despite being inferior she actually knows when and when not to push it and maybe she's making a judgement call based on knowing her damn horse???

Oh my goodness lots of defensive people out there in equine cyber world tonight! I am not trying to tell her what she should be doing with her very nice pony - just commenting that it is a shame that the pony is taking the P - it can only get worse and then what happens to poor pony, once she has decided that she can't get it to do anything any more? I have certainly had my share of troublesome ponies over the years and have had to resort to either giving up or letting someone else (who knows a lot more than me) to sort them out. The point I am making is not that I am any better than she is, but if I get into problems I try and sort them out sensibly (i.e. get one of the kids to ride them, as they are far braver than I am!) And beleive me OK to get on with them yourself (as we all have done) but if you don't know how to get the pony 10 yards from its field......then that is a problem!

No wonder horse and hound forum has the reputation it has reading those replies,

l too prefer to make a horse get on and do the job, not everyone has the confidence to make a pony do what they want it to,you have offered your help maybe she lacks confidence and prefers to turn for home but was there realy any excuse for the comments above!!!

Maybe shes just a nervous rider, struggling, Id probably speak to her on the yard. Mind you I know someone once, they knew it all after riding 3 years, gleefully told me what to do and that I shouldnt jump my on horse, but couldnt get her own horse out of the feild

you can only but offer to help

LMAO. Oh I do so love you Kitsune.

I'd let her get on with it to be honest. I tend to go with "their horse, their rules" unless it is a welfare issue.

I try not to butt in unless required, I have helped people but only when needed, like a girl I know well from the yard I am at needed to lunge her new pony but didn't know where to start. I offered to lunge him. I did however then teach her!

OK sufficiently brow beaten by you guys to retract all of what I have said - of course you are all right - her pony to do with what she likes. Sorry I suppose that I come across as being rather old fashioned. I think I will go back to just writing on the Jumping for Fun Forum, where all we want to do is find a way to make our horses go faster and win races!! Happy New Year one and all!

Unfortunalty many novices belive any natural horsemanship a cure all. I like IH, really do not like paralli but both are so often done wrong that all "alternative horsemanship" people have quite rightly earned that stereotype. Its up to us all buck this stereotype.

I know lol its just posts like this make me sick - thats exactly whats wrong with the horse world - too many people happy to watch, judge and pass comment on you - when you are trying your best! Its bloody ridiculous.

I'm a bit like you ness, in a way. I do make the horse get on with the job (George is or can be a very nappy horse, but consistency over the years I have owned him, has won him over - consistency meaning that he isn't allowed to p around). However, I don't like to be watched schooling, mounting or anything like that; and I don't want my horsemanship questioned thank you very much: this was has worked for me for x number of years so 'butt out' is my motto (on the whole), and I tend to treat others the same, unless a horse is going to come to harm.

You don't need to go - you just need to realise you don't know the whole situation and just because YOU find it easy doesn't mean everyone should.
I mean imagine if she's a member of here - she'd feel like a bit of a pleb wouldn't she - reading whaty you are saying..

Ezme I know what you mean, nothing is a great cure-all. IH has really helped me with a screwed up horse I had, but I am not a devout fan and I'm afraid I'm not a Parelli fan either, can't stand all the hard sell and circus tricks (in my eyes) but then it works for others.
