I think i may have to think of starting a loss of use claim for my gelding as he has had on / off recurrent lameness , and seems to increase each time, my vet has looked at him sevearal time sand there is not really anything showing in any tests, x rays etc .

I purchased him for £2750 and he is insured for this amount , i did not have him vetted and did not need to have vet certificate for insurance inception , i think as he is not seriously high value ,
I dont know how much I would receive for him , for a loss of use claim , have been told by some people it is 60 per cent of value or 100 per cent of value it can vary???

has anyone any experience of pet plan and specifically their loss of use procedures ??? will it drag on forever or are they quite good and staright forward ???? since his lameness obviously stops me riding him and jumping and doing dressage and cross country , he is loss of use for these activities , he may be ok to hack lightly from time to time , would this be ok for loss of use ???? also his lameness hasnt been diagnosed as x, y or z so may they stall due to not definete diagnosis ????

im very worried about him and what i will do but also the prospect of how i would be able to get a similar horse to relace him . i would keep him retired as loss of use as long as he was field sound and pain free and would make decision to put him to sleep if that was in his best interest .

any ideas be great thanks guys .

I don't know what the situation would be with Petplan. They are usually very good and straight forward to deal with. However I have known other companies in the past to claim that a condition was already there when a person bought a horse. That was even with a full 5 stage vetting. Not having had a vetting could weaken your position. If you have insured for loss of use it will tell you on your policy what the % will be. You will have to have taken out this option on your policy to be able to claim. The insurers have the right to get their own vet to examine your horse before paying your claim. Good luck and please let us know what happens.

Your vet will need to be involved in this process - so why not have a chat with them and go from there? They'll be very familiar with the process.

Loss of use is a sepcific option on your insurance so the 1st thing to do is to double check that you are covered and what percentage this is.

When I made my loss of use claim the vets had to provide a statement saying he was unsafe to be ridden (he is a wobbler) and then that had to be verified and finally before they pay out they have to be freezemarked (if they are not already) and have the loss of use mark added, which is an L inside a circle.

I went for loss of use the other day with Pet plan only to be told I wasn't covered for it when I rang them! They did say if he is put down in the next year due to his condition they will pay out what I insured him for.

good grief . i think it is going to be a stressful time !!
how could they say u werent covered by loss of use if you had taken this out with ur cover ???

i was hoping i may be onto a decent company now with petplan , thanks guys xxx

It may not have been part of the policy.

with Petplan LOu is something you choose to add to your cover... like most companies, so if you didnt choose this benefit it wont be on your plan, LOU puts your premiums up..Petplan offer LOU at 100 % or 60 % so depending on what percentage you have ...if 60% will be 60% of the sum insured if 100% then they will take of a residual value...ie if your horse can be used for light hacking they may say he could be sold for £600 so therefore this amount will be deducted off the sum insured for your horse. Lou can be stressful as will need to exploer all avnues of treatment... but speak to your vet if he feels ypur horse meets lou then ask him to write a report supporting LOU and send will your c/f.. if its quite straight forward tehn shouldnt be too stressfull. Good Luck
