I have ordered a pair of petrie boots - i measured as a 51 in height. The company have been fab and have sent me a pair to try on to see if calf and height are correct as i may need a special order.
They sent a 51 height and a 1cm heel riser making them a 50 - the 51 really digs in the back of my leg and with the riser its still really uncomfortable and its digging in when i bend my leg and whilst i am walking. They are sending out a 48cm as this is what they have in stock for me to try - if i go with the 48cm and it fits comfortably will it drop in time? therefore would i be better sticking with the 50 with a 1cm riser then taking it out when they drop?? these boots are alot of money and have bought them hoping to get a few years out of them so want to make sure they are perfect.
How high do you wear them? am not used to wearing boots so high as i have always found them too short as i have long legs. How much does the top outside bit cover? Any tips welcome!

can't help specifically with Petrie boots but are these stiff dressage boots? or soft boots? If stiff ones, I have my Konigs far too tall at the start, use a 2cm heel lift and then ride in them with plasters and whatever else padding I can find (bits of fibergee etc) stuffed behind my knee! Within a few weeks they have usually dropped at the ankle enough to be comfortable, though I still need a 1cm heel lift at the moment (2 week into a new pair)

I do find that boots drop quite a bit when you've ridden in them for a few weeks. Problem is if you go too short then they will be even shorter when they are worn in. You can keep the heel lift in if necessary, it doesn't make any difference to your riding IMO. If you aren't certain that they are too long Id be inclined to get bigger lifts, if there is room in the instep to accomodate them. I bought mine on ebay.

Thank you - they are sending me a 48cm height, but after i spoke to them on the phone i walked around in the 51 with the 1cm heel riser and they actually felt okay! going to try the 48 anyway but will probably opt for the 50 with a 1cm riser then take it out once they have bedded in.
They are gorgeous boots even though i will have to wait 8 weeks for them!

I was measured for my Petrie boots. When they arrived plasters were definately required! Had them 4 weeks now, riding 4/5 horses a day and they have dropped quite a bit, now comfortable to ride in but still difficult to walk and impossible to bend down to bandage legs!

Thank you - tried a 48cm height and was too short, so i have opted for the 50cm and plan to wear with the 1cm heel riser till they drop. Got an 8 week wait but will be so worth it, cant wait to wear them :D

An, want we go through for our sport. And a bit of fashion! I tried on the lovely ariat long boots made of softer leather but they also were a good 1 inch or so too long. I didn't get them in the end as couldn't face spending so much and not knowing if they'd be comfortable, but interesting to read how much some boots do drop. And what you crazy folk put up with before they drop! My friend bought a pair, with heel raisers, so I'll use her as an experiment before I fork out haha.

So worth it though... super comfortable when they are worn in :) i ride better in stiff boots too, stops me contorting myself into odd shapes and also forces me to have horse more in front of my leg as it's far less appealing to nag all the time :o Still hack in Ariats but the difference is huge.

I can't get in my Petries anymore *sob* but mine definitely dropped a lot so you've made the right choice. Enjoy them when they arrive :)
