have recently rescued a lovely 2 1/2 year old boy who i believe to be at least part of this breed (am sending off photos to the pharaoh hound club chairman for him to confirm for me). Just wondering if anyone else has any experience of the breed and can offer any advice or words of wisdom?

Thanks

I know a few. I adore the breed, they are my kind of dog, full of personality and amazing family members with enormous intellegence....but yes with that comes hard work. They arent an easy breed from what I know/have seen.

I think definately as a breed characteristic they are incredibley loyal and affectionate and not at all aloof. Unless people mistake their strong hunting drive and subsequent 'deafness' for being aloof.

There was one in an agility class we took. It was a bit skittish, and very aloof with other people, as others have said. Gorgeous dog to look at, though.

Many years ago, and I'd never even heard of the breed, far less seen one, upon spotting my first, I asked the owner how her lurcher was bred! :o:eek: I felt a bit silly, the owner looked horrified, I made my apologies, and beat a hasty retreat!! :D

I've never had anything to do with them, but agree that they are handsome dogs. They somehow look very "clean cut" to me, in much the same way as Ridgebacks do. As others, I rather like dogs which are aloof.

Alec.

PMSL! I bet she did!

Twice now, I've had people ask me if my youngsters are 'sprollies'. I confess I was a bit touchy!

We used to take our whippets lure coursing, someone bought their pharoah hounds, they were beautiful, but really thick and disobedient, only slightly smarter than the other dumbest dog ever created - the afghan hound. The women came with their pockets stuffed with cooked sausages which they hoped to use to get their dogs back.

Wrong - they were too stupid to recognise their owners, or the sausages.

ps, I love to watch the afghan's, they are truly beautiful, but quite brainless.

I have grown up with afghan hounds and we had one until very recently, and apart from one exception, I can't disagree with you :))! They are not the sharpest tools in the box... I met a lady who had a pharaoh hound once and he was gorgeous but had an extremly high prey drive. They remind me of my mare's breed, Akhal Teke, in a funny way (ie aloof, beautiful in an unusual way, and, ahem, extremely stubborn)

Why have they broken toes?
I have never know one break a toe but I have had a Dobermann & a Borzoi break toes -the dobe hit a tree and the Borzoi fell in a rabbit hole.

Spoke to lady in our group last night and she said pharoh owners should expect to get numerous broken toes on their dog.

If its anything like my old lurcher - they can dislocate toes from turning too quick on dodgy surfaces. (stupid thing managed to do it twice!)

apologies i couldnt get on the comp yesterday.. i will try and post a pic when i'm next up my mums, her computer is far better than mine!

I'l give a bit of a back story for my boy (jimmy). He is 2 1/2 and i rescued him from my local rescue centre at the beginning of july. He came from the pound and had been neglected with numerous bald patches. I didn't pick him due to his looks (although as a bias mum i think he is gorgeous) i literally saw him and fell in love, he then managed to sweet talk my OH by sitting on his bum and put both his front paws in his hands. Within a very short period of time he has become incredibly loyal to myself and then over slightly more time, my other half.

He loves all women, older men he has an issue with but with an unknown past it was expected and we are working on it. He has a big hunting instinct but is completely and utterly rubbish at it, his favourite hunt at the moment is flying birds and we love to try and climb trees to catch squirrels.

He is easily let off the lead down the bridleway and has no problems with my conure when he is out the cage. My rabbits bore him but the guinea pigs are facinating.

The reason i believe him to be a pharaoh hound is his ears, bright amber eyes, brown nose and his general 'look', he is also has very senstive skin which i heard can be a trait, he does also 'blush' with his nose and ears when hes excited.

regardless of what he is hes perfect! (apart from drinking out of the toilet and ruining my non jimmy walking shoes as we clearly don't need those any longer!)
