Physillum Husk

There are lots of places to buy it online and the price varies a little, but not much. It's all human grade ie fit for people to consume, as far as I know. Obviously, larger quantities (1 kg) is the cheapest way to buy it. It's all the same stuff, just check it is called psyllium or psyllium husk and they haven't added anything else (if it's significantly cheaper than others, that is probably the case).
 
I snapped some up in the feedmark offer too. however, i will probably get the NAF pellets next time because you need to keep the straight stuff pretty dry or it gels up in the feed, and i prefer to feed quite wet bucket feeds.
 
I bought some yesterday. It was NAF's one. Loading dose is 12 scoops for Patsy but she point blank refused to eat it. Her food turned into a slimey gloop so think i'm going to have to introduce slowly. Ive seen others have recommended pellets as they are more paletable. I think I should have ventured down that road!

Ooh perhaps I should try feeding Patsy the powder seperate with chaff. She has a mash for feed and the Psyliium defo made the feed look more like glue!

the instructions on the feedmark one say to keep it dry. when it gets wet it globs up in their mouths, it looks fairly inedible!
 
Mine all still hoover their mini feeds with the Feedmark psyllium powder added. That is soaked hay cobs but made up on the dry side, so that it is crumbly but not sloppy and is fed immediately after mixing. I've not noticed it swelling up at all.

I did empty some elderly well over their use by date psyllium dregs on the muck heap recently, and it did swell up rather dramatically overnight.

The NAF pellets sound to be worth looking into as an alternative to the powder.

Unless I completely didnt see instructions on the packet (which is quite possible) then I totally fluffed up! Will feed it dry. I spilt a bit outside my stable and created a nice skid patch! Will probably forget when I go back down and end up on my backside!

Thank you for explaining and making me realise im more of an idiot than I give myself credit for ;-)

Oh is it not ok that it gels up? Assumed it had the same effect..

My mare is fed psyllium in her feeds 1 week in 4 to prevent sand colic. The gloopiness is what scoops up any sand that is in her gut, so it's fed wet. Gloopiness is good! TBH she doesn't particularly like it but will eat it up ok, being a bit of a pig.
 
i think the idea of keeping it dry-ish in feeds is that it gloops up in the gut, where the palatability is no longer a problem. When i fed it a bit wetter (on autopilot making feeds!) my horse refused to eat it and it got all glooped up under his lips, poor sod :oops:
 
You can get it for £12.99 + delivery from online wholefood shops. It's exactly the same thing but without the equestrian premium.

I'm feeding it to mine as the fields are so dry and dusty. I sprinkle on top of his (soaked) feed and give it to him straightaway. Not had an issue with him eating it unless I leave it too long and it goes gluey.
