Does anyone go to Pilates sessions regularly? I'm finding myself to be really stiff in my lower back, it may be old age (I'm 47 next birthday) or a recurring injury from falling on the ice last winter. I wondered whether taking up Pilates will help me regain my flexibility. At the moment the very thought of riding makes me wince. Any advice or suggestions would be much appreciated, I'm feeling old before my time and rather sorry for myself as you can tell.:(

I do pilates and find it really helps give it a go, I did have a back injury hence why I first started to go, I love it.

Have fun

I have been doing pilates once a week for a few months - for me, it's really about improving core strength/stability with lots of stretching exercises. It also improves your balance. I am older than you and it has definitely helped various aches and pains :o
The only thing I'd say is that if you have a bad back get it checked out first. Good luck!! :) :)

Just improving your core will help your lower back as it means you can support yourself better and will have better posture

I have always done yoga twice a week for years but my boyfriend moved in 6 weeks ago and all i've done is eat chips - I can really tell the differance and the loss of flexability in that short time !

in a simple answer GOD YES!! I have back problems and started a few weeks ago, the difference is amazing!

I would also suggest going to your GP and asking for a physio appointment, mine has helped me a lot both with my ankle and also my back!! most of the exercises she has given me are similar or the same as pilates However because she knew what my problem was she knew which exercises to target my back pain.

When I first started I was having back pain all the time, now only 6wks later I don't get it much at all and I am not as religious about doing the physio as I should be

I am 45 so I knw what you mean :D

Hi - I want to do pilates as I have heard they are fab and really help.

However, there is no way I have time to go to a class or anything, can you do it from a video??
Has anyone does this and it's helped them??

Thanks,

x

you can get videos etc gemma tattersall (sp) does an equine one but i found a couple of lessons to get the idea and technique helped massively

Any form of excercise will do anyone the world of good, doesn't matter if it's pilates to be honest.

Thanks Shipley - That's a good idea - I could definitely try and do a few lessons just to then go and get a video and do it at home.

I do exercise, but pilates is all about building up core strength and with every exercise you build up different muscles, so jogging being an exercise wont specifically help with that, unlike pilates which seems great for riders!

Just so everyone knows, my post was not a personal dig against pilates. I've done it for years and my sister teaches pilates and yoga.

I didn't mention jogging but actually, jogging is very good for your core. I've not met a runner with a flabby belly yet, have you?

Boxercise is very good for 'core' stuff, as is swimming, tennis, weights etc......

It absolutely does!

I do ten minutes most mornings just to stretch my spine out. It takes me at least five minutes to be able to turn over in bed when I wake up, and stretching it via pilates is such a relief.

If you can, try and book a couple of (private) sessions initially (or small classes) - expensive but at least you get one to one instruction to show the technique properly and then you can leverage from that at home.

There are a couple of good videos (just go on to amazon and read reviews) and also programmes on the fitness channel on sky that you could skyplus and playback.

I absolutey love running - but although good for core, not so good for my degenerative discs and arthritic knees (knee issue caused by too much running actually) - jeezus, I am only 31! I get very jealous when I see someone having a lovely run in the evening - cos I can't anymore :(
