Pink Mash - Important Info

I tried it recently as a result of calling and asking feed advice. Neither horse would touch it! I almost called the vet for Rigsby as he has NEVER turned his nose up at feed before!

I would have thought they should recall and re-package for such an important message?

I wonder if there have been horses with choke or impactions? Also, if the ingredients haven't changed, why is it not soaking as well?

?

You would think so, but with how many choke cases have emerged with Saracen Re-leave, and saracen still not updating the feeding info, I guess we shouldn't be surprised!
Perhaps a different quality grain input, overdried after garvest or similar? I'd be interested to know

We do have Saracen Re-Leave, and the bag dies not seem to mention soaking. Luckily, he has half a mug once a day, so it's not likely to cause a choke, especially as it's fed with Speedy beet.

i thought saracen had changed that. their website recommends that it is soaked.

Oh, I have only seen a bag that wasn't that recently bought - perhaps this has been updated then. Jolly good! There was a time fairly recently where it seemed that every 2 minutes a horse was going down with serious choke with it, when it had been fine until that point. I haven't seen any in a while, most things will be alright in small quantities so I wouldn't worry if you're not feeding much of it

My vet recommended pink mash to tempt my fussy one, as we have to get sucralfate into her twice a day. Luckily I sent for a sample rather than buying a whole bag, because she wouldn't touch it.

I bought Saracen Recovery Mash, for Rigs when he was recovering from colic. I checked that it was compatible with EMS, low sugar/starch diet.

On the second bag, a huge lump of what looked like molasses plopped out. I took a photo, sent it to them, and they said it wasn't molasses, just banana flavouring. I broke it in half and tasted it. Yep, does taste like molasses.

They did give my money back for that bag, and I have since found that they use the same machines for the feeds and sometimes the sticky molasses will collect and make a ball and drop into whatever is being made. So, it probably was molasses.

That's awful! I know these things happen, but it could seriously impact a lami prone.

Thanks for heads up. I feed pink mash and normally it dissolves to mush in just 3-5 minutes but it is now taking longer. The pellets in the most recent bag look a bit shinier so maybe there is a coating on there now that was not there before. Though they say the ingredients are no different so must be something happening in the manufacturing process. Mine love it though Lottie will only eat it if a chaff is mixed in. Amber drank pink mash soup afrer every event as a very good way to recover. She loved it plain.

Mollasses are now marked as an ingredient FYI

Yes but odd if it’s a standard ingredient they’d insist it’s impossible

I had asked before buying it, weather it was suitable for an EMS horse who only eats stuff with less than 10% sugar and starch combined. I was assured it was.
It all seemed very strange to me too, hence I lost confidence in the product and wouldn't feed it any more. I asked for my money back, and to be fair, they gave it.
