what do you all use on your pink nosed horses to help with this?

what do you use to heal it?

and what do you use to prevent it?

looking forward to next summer is a nosed fly mask the way to go?

Factor 50 if you think it's the sun - I use stuff designed for children. Red Horse honey heal is also good stuff for fixing sore bits, although most of it seems to end up on me....

Lovely horse btw!

yep, my pink nosed horses have factor 50 in the sun :)
If they do get burnt then just keeping on applying suncream seems to be very soothing and help with the healing. None of mine like the fly masks with noses but I'd use them if they would accept them ;)

I've got TWO pink-noses (what ever what I thinking of???); they deffo need special care, especially in the sort of summer we've just had!

One of my pink-nosed, my old boy, has ridiculously sensitive skin; he has sweet itch, and I have to be very careful what I use on him. What's worked for him, is ordinary bog-standard kiddies "sensitive skin" suncreams, as high SPF as you can get, have used Sainsburys as this is the nearest to me. I apply it with a damp sponge all round his muzzle area; you might have to persevere with this as it's quite a strange thing to do to them and they may not like it to start with, but best are firmer movements rather than a "powder puff" type action.

I am aware you can purchase special sunblocks designed for horses; they seem to be very expensive, and I haven't experimented with any of them.

(Edited) I did try a fly-mask with the nose-cover bit on old boy, but he hated it and went crazy in it, rubbing his nose along the ground and then rolling trying to get it off. It seemed to make him want to sneeze......... so I didn't persevere with that route. Just not worth it.

I have mastered sun protection for my pink nosed friend.
Factor 50 human sun cream didnt work unless you apply it every few hours.
Best thing on terms of cream is - https://www.hyperdrug.co.uk/Aniwell-FiltaBac-Cream/productinfo/FILTABACC/ I apply it at 6am and its still there at 8pm! expensive but does the job, just have a towel close by to rub it off your hand as water does nothing to get it off :)

As the creams do work out expensive especially after this hot hot summer i invested in one of these and a cheap £5.00 field safe collar. Since using it he hasn't burned once, he has only ever managed to get it off once so i dont think he hates wearing it.

I have three with pink noses. Moses just wears a fly mask with a nose cover during hot weather and that keeps it fine. Kevin doesn't need anything done and is fine, he does not burn. Brian burns a little even with a full mask and so I put a little sun cream on once a day and he is fine.

Mine gets treated to nose covers imported from Germany :p and cream but that is because of his risk for photosensitivity.

Previously he's just had a long fly mask.

Filtabacc. Best product ever!

It's F50, also acts as a soothing cream for burns and a barrier against other things that can irritate the skin - buttercups in flower bring my pink-nosed beast out in sores. It isn't oil based, like sudacreme is, so it doesn't heat up in the sunshine, and it stays put for a couple of days at least. I put it on my mare Fridays and Sundays, then get someone else to put it on mid-week for me. It works a treat, and my mare's nose has been much better this spring and summer, compared to last year.

Filtabac. It's really thick and gloopy so you can put it on the night before and it's still there all the next day. One big pot (about £20 I think, it's been so long since I bought some so don't realy remember!) lasts me at least two summers and you can use it on cuts and grazes as it's anti-bacterial and soothing too. Brilliant stuff.

Full face fly mask worn 24/7 during summer if he lives out. I have two Shires Fieldsafe masks that are thick mesh, one for wearing and the other in the wash. I haven't had signs of sunburn for a few years, whereas suncream didn't last five minutes.

could you send me a link to nose covers that come from Germany :)

I use these ones (they have a few options but the ones that go fully over do apparently wear a bit though we thought we might need one as he has a bit of pink round the side)

https://www.innohorse.de/en/nose-screen-sun-protection?c=222

in summer he wears one 24/7 on a soft velcro headcollar over his no-nose fly mask and in winter just with the headcollar (that's why we started with them as didn't want him to wear a fly mask just for the nose cover all winter). The first one lasted about a year.

Ozvet Sunoff equine sun cream, and fly masks with noses and UV protection. Sun cream on almost all year round - I've been known to apply it on a sunny day in December before.

Factor 50 unscented suncream. Buy it at the end of the season when it's reduced and keep it in the fridge.

For next year I am getting Filtabacc, but I know from experience it can get everywhere and is a total s*d to get off tack.
