Plaiting a 4 month old foal

You will be fine. Foals take hardly any time to plait. Just have someone feed him from a bucket while you do the plaits.

Futurity is fast approaching... and with Otti being such a lively lad i think im going to struggle to plait him. Any suggestions as to how i can get him to keep still?! :D
x

Get a few mates and sit on him!! Joking apart  do a couple let him mooch then a couple more...or get a mate and rattle them off pdq!! good luck you taking him to myerscough??

*learns something new everyday*

I dont think its compulsary to plait for futurity but mark are given for overall picture..so if foal has a BOG BRUSH mane like mne has atm it could detract and the higest marks are what everyone wants...

Toast if your having probs might be worth contacting Ciss to see if you really do need to plait up:D

It isnt compulsory but it is usual to plait and show your foal to the best it can be shown. Plaiting shows off the neck and withers and allows the whole of the outline of the animal to be seen without distractions. I would not present a foal without plaiting it.

Yeah im off to Myerscough!!! I really would like to plait to make him look more presentable as im paranoid about being laughed at as it is! It is as tiny bit bog brushy, i'll have to get something yummy to tempt him to keep still with! Can you give foals Sedalin?! :p

Seperate the mane into sections - let foal have a fidget/drink

Plait one or two - let foal have a fidget/drink

Plait next two - repeat fidget/drink

Roll up first two - repeat fidget

Etc etc etc

Mine has 5 plaits in the pic, and didn't take too long - while foal had a drink/fidget I just finished getting the mare ready.

Never held mine, tied it up, just followed loose while I did it.

He is indeed by Ontario! I'll make sure theres lots of pics :) Thanks for the advice CrazyMare!!! Your baba looks lovely :)

Another question, will it matter if hes sporting the moth eaten rug look? x

Would you seriously consider giving a 4 month old foal Sedalin so that you could plait it? I would only consider it if it needed to be done for the foal's own good e.g. in order to dress a wound etc.

AS far as I am aware you shouldn't plait the mane but just the tail. We have shown foals for years and never had a problem plaiting them.

I know I am opening a can of worms here- but our foal has been clipped, most where at the big shows.

That slightly moth eaten foal in the pic won a first premium & highest scoring Sports Pony filly that day ;)

No, it doesn't matter, just present it to the best of your ability.

Edit - and her plaits were swen in and always have been - I don't do bands.

What do you do if your foal's mane is very fine and very short? My little ginger person has got one more month to grow more mane (its currently about 2" long!) but I'm not very optimistic that I'll be able to do much with it. The only way I could get hair that short into plaits is to put hundreds of microscopic ones in and I don't think he'd stand still that long.

Ah im glad you said that!! he's half fawn coloured and half black at the moment! I'll definitely be sewing, his mane is too fine to band! x

I must admit I thought why on earth would you want to plait up a foal unti I saw this pic - makes a world of difference, and this person suggested a very sensible way of doing it.

What a gorgeous, and well turned out foal - s/he deserved to win! :D
