Plaiting a long mane?

Any tips please? I am pretty good at plaiting so can pick up a new style easily enough. I have a connie with a long mane who needs plaiting for hunting. I have previously done a french braid, a running braid was useless and fell out straight away. It stayed in ok for a bit of dressage, but ideally I want to plait the night before and have something that will stay put!

Here is his mane, although now there is a bald patch from his rug where it looks thinner.

Any idea what may stay in firmly and look smart?

Thanks!

I would shorten it and thin it a little then do normal plaits, connies are usually shown with their manes shorter than yours so there is no need to keep it so long, if you plan on showing at some point.

There was a fab video doing the rounds recently showing how to do normal bobble plaits with a long mane, hang on I'll try and find it :)

Oh that is a great video, thank you ! I may try that out tomorrow, looks quick to do in the morning too.
I have considered pulling but I love his long mane :o if it has rubbed out I may have to anyway or it will look messy! I will have a play tomorrow .
Thanks :)

I saw that video too and love the look of it and am desperate to try it however being on an event yard there aren't any manes long enough :( please let me know how it turns out :)

All of my others have a short hunter mane, I was enjoying the long mane for a change haha. I will have a go in the morning, if not I will give him a bit of a trim !

That mane should be plenty long enough to do a tight carriage plait right along the crest - keep the sections small and keep it tight so it doesn't hang down at all. Doubt you could keep it nice overnight with him stretching down to eat etc but they don't take long to do with a bit of practice - I can do it in a couple of minutes now.
Thought that video is very clever, want to try it on the fells just for fun but I'm not sure it will work quite so well on a thick and long mane!

So I went and tried this on my Spanish boy's long and thick mane (a PITA to plait :D). Here is the mane in question:

And here is the result:

Not bad IMO (though it was not as easy to do as it appeared in the video, required some practice). It looks nice but does not feel very secure. Next time I will use a needle and thread instead of rubber bands and sew each plait before continuing with the next one, I think it will be better that way.
